Is $180 a price for a new "consumer grade" grinder,or is $20?
You already know the answers. If you want real espresso on a tight budget it's a german made hand cranked zassenhaus. If you have money for new it starts at a Nemox Lux, elevates mildly in price and convenience to a Lelit Plo53, and then you hit the Gaggia MDF then the Rocky.
If you just want great drip you can get by with a capresso or baratza or... My capresso sits right next to the Super Jolly on the counter and they get along just fine.
There is no miracle-grinder except for the occasional find on Craigslist or ebay. Be prepared to wait for years for that one.

Regarding static, I think freshness and roast of beans has a huge impact so all grinders might be susceptible. I had a kitchenaid proline, baratza virtuoso and presently have a mazzer mini doserless. I would say all have no static for dark roasts or coffee with little chaff but none are impervious to chaff static for light to medium fresh roasted coffee (ie home roasted).
I had a braun with plastic receptacle that was very bad for static with any coffee. Coffee would shoot out of receptacle. Virtuoso is plastic as well but is coated presumably with a conductive material that gets grounded. Mazzer is fully grounded but charged particles will stick to neutral conductors (hence chaff problem). I'm guessing chaff is just held in place by friction after it makes initial contact.
That said, I never had a mess the above (except braun) becuase I just knock the receptacle agains the garbage can to shake off chaff for drip / press, and espresso is usually dark enough that there is no chaff to speak of.

I just upgraded from one of the original Virtuoso with the coated clear grind hopper to the new model with the lower motor speed and opaque grinds hopper and the static is virtually non-existant.
Totally agree on this one. I have been using a Pro Line for espresso for about 1.5 years now and it truly does offer static-free grounds delivery. Very well built for the price point too.

I used a borrowed pro-line for a bit but didn't find it did a great job on espresso. It was usable for espresso but had absolutely no adjustment in the espresso range - you got what you got. I've since bought a Mazzer Mini and am extremely satisfied. Now in the pro-line's defense, it did not have any static issues and would be great for most coffee types - just not the best for espresso. It didn't have the adjustability in the espresso range to compensate for differences in age of roast, humidity, bean types, etc. I get much more consistently great shots now that I have the mini. I also used a whirly blade for a bit and could get espresso with it - but it was far too fiddly and very difficult to get any kind of consistent results from. You'd get a really good shot and then the next one would be a sink shot. Nowadays, as long as I do a flush on my espresso machine if it's been on for a while, I get consistently good shots.
