Hi all,
Below is a picture of a grinder I found on craigslist (sorry about the quality of pic). The owner took in a trade so knows little except it was used in a cafe for the past year. On the bottom it says "RR45" so I'm wondering if this a Rossi RR45 or similar. The grinders look like they would need to be replaced. Where can I find these and how much might they cost? Also the curly cable going to the doser has a little fray. On the doser is a little counter which reads "5952." Is the number of doses this machine has dispensed? I'm trying to decide if I want such a behemoth, and endure the consternation of my spouse, so would appreciate any info. Also, what do you think a machine like this should cost? I've seen some Rossi's on eBay but don't know if this is the same and how the conditions of the machines compare.

Yep, it's a Rossi RR45. Nice grinders, you can get burrs from cafeparts, their prices are pretty reasonable. Parts are also available from espressoparts. I don't think I would spend more than $200 for it. I ditched the hopper on mine and used a Aeropress funnel in its place, other options are a canning funnel or just load beans in the throat and use a tamper to prevent popcorning. They are big but without the hopper they aren't such a behemoth and they are built like a tank. Mine also had a frayed cable, I just replaced it with some shrink tubing, it is for the auto-shutoff if the doser fills up, not an issue for home use. I think you can probably remove it. Be prepared to do some cleaning, the gunk in mine was amazing.

Thanks for all the info. David and sorry for the late reply.
When I saw this machine I thought it was waaaaay bigger than anything I needed. I like the idea of getting a used commercial grinder if it weren't so immense. The guy selling it was asking $250 but I don't know if he would have taken less. The burrs definitely needed to be replaced but from from my research it didn't seem like they were that expensive.
So at the moment I'm trolling eBay and craigslist to see if anything smaller/commercial pops up. If I don't find something there I was kind of leaning toward the Tranquilo. It seems pretty substantial for home use and seems to have a very loyal following.
Thanks again.
BTW, would a used Mazzer SJ or Mini be much smaller than the RR45?

Thanks again to David and Juanjo for their RR45 insight, and also links to parts, etc. You're both good advocates for this machine, but I still think it might overwhelm my coffee corner. Although I might go look at another craigslist commercial grinder - the Nuovo Simonelli MDX - but I'm afraid it's just as big as the RR45 and I'm just spinning my wheels. They're also asking more for it.
BTW, I just scored a Gaggia Coffee off eBay (am waiting with bated breath to see it) and wonder if any of the grinders I've mentioned above would be better or worse with the Gaggia. Any different recommendations?

Mark,
As (I believe) I mentioned in your other thread -- maybe not -- I used a Gaggia Coffee for 20 years before I upgraded, and for all that time, I used a Gaggia MDF grinder with it. New, they now run $299, but as you are in LA, I'd swing by your nearest Peet's -- last time I checked, they still had old (pre-price hike) inventory that was only $199!
Depending upon how mechanically inclined you are (I am not), you can "cut down" the hopper on a Mazzer (for example), or even run it without the hopper (just put a 58mm metal tamper in the throat to prevent popcorning) . . .
FWIW, I'd stick with "name" brands -- names known for espresso grinders. In other words, I'd avoid (e.g.) Kitchen-Aid and stick with a Gaggia MDF or Rancilio Rocky on the "home end" or stay with the idea of a used commercial grinder (and possibly a new set of burrs) off of craigslist and/or eBay . . .
Espresso Parts NW s a great source for parts, like burr sets, tampers, cleaner, etc.

Thanks Zin for the suggestion about looking for an MDF at Peet's. I'll stop there soon.
I also continue to scan eBay and craigslist for something Mazzerish. Saw something called the Mazzer "Mestre." Anyone have any idea what this is??? I'm not familiar enough with the Mazzer line to try to identify it. I do see other Mazzers, SJ and Luigi, but they have been bid up a little more than I was hoping to spend. But the search goes on . . .
Just ordered a Rosewood tamper from 1st-Line and am hoping it and my Coffee get here soon!
My RR45 works GREAT, for home use is overkill but it give you a piece of mind... with one of those you dont have to even think about a grinder.. you have one FOREVER..:)
