@Dave In order to rule out any electrical problem, you can give a thorough cleaning of the grinder as Rob has instructed in this thread and try the grinder at a friend's house using the less oily and shiny beans.

I didn't get around to checking the power, or leaving my place with the grinder yet. Did buy a kill a watt though, so I'll be sure to report back with those results once it gets here.

Results: used the kill-a-watt. Voltage is fine, 122.8V. Amperage, is not. Under no load, as in no beans, the Vario is simply pulling 0.31A. Yes, 310mA. Under load, that jumps to 1.58, and as it starts to bog down, that number starts to plummet. In comparison: the Infinity under no load pulls 1.51A and under load jumps up to about double that~1.5x that. To those non engineers/electricians, the motor is simply unable to generate any torque.

You've more than likely got a stripped drive gear on the motor. If it won't draw more current while grinding beans (motor loading), the gear is stripped/partially stripped & the belt is slipping (no torque & resultant increased current draw). When that happens the melted plastic from that gear 9 time out of 10 will damage & strip some of the belt face teeth so that is best to replace too.
P.S. It could only be a slack/loose drive belt too.

Indeed, I did consider this on my 2 year old machine. However, on the out-of-box refurb replacement they sent me? On the first grind? I mean, anything is possible and it's clearly still happening. The engineer in me tells me that that's the problem, but then I wonder if the refurb was originally sent back for that very issue and simply not fixed?

I'm not sure this is the best thread o post this in, but it's probably worth a shot.
I'm currently trying to decide between a Vario and a Preciso. My usage will probably be 80% pour over 10% drip and 10% espresso. I've read a ton of posts and articles, as well as Mark's guide to all the Baratza grinders, and I still haven't been able to find a straight forward answer on the various ability to do slightly finer then drip grinds. I've read lots on the press quality, but that doesn't bother me as I almost never use my press pot. So could you guys help me out, if you use the your Vario for v60, aeropress or syphon use, what's the consistency like? Are there a large amount of fines? Can anyone directly compare it with the Preciso in regards to their pour-over capabilities?
