For what it's worth, my (currently out of commission) Preciso's problems started after a batch of Grindz. Not sure if that had anything to do with it, but I didn't ever get to the point of removing the lower bur to check.
Basically, I did a normal cleaning (+Grindz, which I'd only used once before), and when I reassembled it, it couldn't grind fine anymore. Like, drip grind at 8, shots spraying out in 3 seconds, etc. I sent it in for repairs (still under warranty), and when I got it back, it was exactly the same. Called Baratza and got talked through disassembling/reassembling it and still nothing, so now they're sending me a new one.
As frustrating as all of this has been, I do appreciate their customer service. I still can't shake the impression that the Preciso seems to be the disproportionate subject of a lot of threads here about malfunctions (and almost all of those threads seems to be variations on the malfunction I had), but that's obviously not scientific. So, I don't know. Maybe the Preciso's a flawed design that needs a revision; maybe they just sold a lot of them and a proportionate number of people have the usual problems. Maybe I just got unusually unlucky. I still wonder if I would've been better off with a Vario or something else entirely, but while it worked, the Preciso was a great grinder.

I was referring to the VARIO, NOT the Preciso. Obviously no removal of the lower burr THERE. OT, BUT REFERRING TO THE PRECISO: OK...when you replaced the upper burr, were you sure you made sure the little red dot on the burr was at approx 5 o'clock? If not, empty the grinder, clean thoroughly, and replace the burr as I described. Replace the hopper, making sure that the tabs are correctly placed. (I mess this up a long while back!)
Then run the grinder and slowly twist the hopper from coarse to about #9, and back a few times. Then position the hopper at #9, Micro at K. Pour in about 100 grams of beans...hopefully freshly roasted within 10 days of the roast date, and grind. If it feels like sugar, or a little finer, you're good to go. Any fast pours would then be due to ...gulp..barista malfunction.
Personally, I don't use Grindz, as I find a 5 minute thorough cleaning with the provided brush, making sure to get ALL the schmutz off the burrs, works best for ME.
