Is a 1996 mazzer just as good at getting an effective grind if it is in good working condition? What are the pros and cons of older model grinders?

Yes.

There are no inherent pros and cons.  It's really a matter of the condition of the specific grinder.

I've got a very, very old Major - imported by La Cara in San Francisco.  It doesn't look quite the same as current models (the body is two piece with the base a separate color from the rest of the body - otherwise looks about the same).

It takes the same burrs - grinds beautifully.

Probably wouldn't be quite as easy to sell since it looks different.

Regardless of age - you'd probably want to replace burrs when picking up a used one.  The way the burr carrier works to adjust the grind looks exactly the same on my old one as on the new ones.

I have rebuilt several Mazzers and for the most part, there is no REAL difference between the newer or older grinders. The body styles are different but as said above, the burrs (the heart of the grinder) are the same new or old. I have found though that the older style grind a little slower than the newer ones (about a second over the course of 18g) but that is unlikely to be enough to make any difference in heat transfer to the beans.

If you find a good deal, and it works well, likely all it will need aside from cosmetics is a new set of burrs.
