Hello everyone. I am currently purchasing my first espresso machine with a grinder combination. I have set my price range and also have several grinders in mind. Please feel free to comment on what is crucial, lets just to say, for the selection of the espresso machine also ?
Total budget: ~$1000
Espresso machine: Rancilio Silvia CrossLand CC1
Choice of grinder(?): Ranclio Rockey Doserless Nuova Simonelli series; the "Grinta" or maybe the more expensive "MCI" Ascaso i-Steel I-1 Baratza Preciso

None of those aside from the Preciso are that great AFAIK, and the Preciso is probably not going to be adequate for your setup. Go with a Vario if you're into the smaller form factor, otherwise get a used Super Jolly if you're willing to deal with commercial equipment and want something that will last a lifetime.

AFAIK- As far as I know. I'm not sure there will be a huge difference in quality between the Preciso and the Vario. It seems to be more of a personal choice than anything. From the list you've posted, I'd go with the Preciso.

I own its "bigger" brother, the Baratza Vario, which I would recommend without hesitation. The Baratza Preciso comes close, based upon the reports posted here on CG by people I've come to know and trust over the years I've been here, and given the great customer service Baratza provides, I feel quite comfortable in recommending the Preciso.
I have a Nuova Simonelli MCI, and prefer my Baratza Vario.
The Rocky Doserless is too pricey for what you get, and has been surpassed by other grinders in the market.
I'm not a huge fan of the I-1.

if so, what espresso machine would you match with this grinder?
There is no tit-for-tat with espresso machines and grinders -- it is never a matter of this being the best match between machine and grinder, and were you to get that, it would be a disaster. You need a capable grinder -- that's crucial. The choice of espresso machine is somewhat less important.
That may sound counter-intuitive, but it's true.
The Four M's of Espresso: 1) the Macinazione is the grinder, and with it, the correct grinding of the coffee beans; 2) the Miscela is the coffee beans/blend itself; 3) the Macchina is the espresso machine; and 4) the Mano is the skilled hand of the barista.
All four are important. Nothing is more important than the grinder.

Could you clarify? First you say the Preciso is not going to be adequate then you say there may not be a big difference between the Preciso and Vario. You finish with recommending the Preciso from the list. Just a little contradictory imo. Any reason why you don't seem very high on the preciso? It's certainly not a tank like a mazzer but as far as grinds go it's more than adequate and would do the job for the OP.

I've had a Preciso for about 4.5 months and have been very pleased with it. I had an opportunity to upgrade to the Vario-W, which I've taken, but if that opportunity hadn't arisen, I would have been happy to stay with my Preciso and add the Esatto grinder attachment to get the weighed output functionality (an option for you in the future perhaps). Therefore my vote would be to go for the Preciso. Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy your choice.
