Hello all, bought my first grinder. It is a Rio branded Mazzer Super Jolly, off of ebay for 275. Was looking at the Baratza Vario, but ended up making an impulse buy. Thoughts on whether this is good for a first grinder....? cheers
+1 on the new burrs...if only for peace of mind. There are many threads here on the proper way to remove and replaced the upper burr for cleaning the SJ. You MUST be careful when replacing the upper burr assembly, or you could cross thread, and that would be disastrous.

All above are dead on. Great deal. You have an older generation grinder, nothing wrong with that! I had one and it ground exactly the same as the newer brother next to him, well the older one was about 3/4 second longer to grind the same volume but quality was every bit as good.
You likely will not need to changed grinders, ever. Lust may work it's way into the picture and you may WANT to change (we all have been bit by that bug) but in a home environment, that grinder should last for decades.
Also as above, just for ease of mind, change the burrs and DO be careful as the upper carrier is easy to cross thread if you are not paying attention. Once it is cross threaded, it is a VERY expensive part to replace.
