Hello all, bought my first grinder.  It is a Rio branded Mazzer Super Jolly, off of ebay for 275.  Was looking at the Baratza Vario, but ended up making an impulse buy.  Thoughts on whether this is good for a first grinder....?
cheers

nice deal!  you're probably gonna need to get some new burrs now.

i paid 350 local for one that's a bit newer.   275 sounds like a really good deal.

+1 on the new burrs...if only for peace of mind.
There are many threads here on the proper way to remove and replaced the upper burr for cleaning the SJ.
You MUST be careful when replacing the upper burr assembly, or you could cross thread, and that would be disastrous.

Excellent grinder...I owned 2 of them.

Agreed.  Don't second guess the purchase -- that's a good deal -- but do replace the burrs with a new set . . .

Read around.  Pay attention to all the other grinders that are compared to the Super Jolly.  It has been an excellent second grinder in my experience.  It would have been a killer first grinder IMO.

Price a new one.  Look at the comps (always a good way to determine the deal you're getting regardless of topic) in the B/S/T subforum.

All above are dead on. Great deal. You have an older generation grinder, nothing wrong with that! I had one and it ground exactly the same as the newer brother next to him, well the older one was about 3/4 second longer to grind the same volume but quality was every bit as good.

You likely will not need to changed grinders, ever. Lust may work it's way into the picture and you may WANT to change (we all have been bit by that bug) but in a home environment, that grinder should last for decades.

Also as above, just for ease of mind, change the burrs and DO be careful as the upper carrier is easy to cross thread if you are not paying attention. Once it is cross threaded, it is a VERY expensive part to replace.

Check out the CBSJ mod for the doser. it is easy to do and makes using the doser a joy (well for me any way, I have had both the doser and the doserless adapter on the same grinder and I MUCH prefer the doser. YMMV)

Great deal on that grinder!

What they all said Doug!, great deal on the Super Jolly.

P.S. I have a Mazzer Mini bought new & a Rio branded Mazzer Major & you will not go wrong with that choice for an espresso grinder!
