Have been scouring the threads here and hb but not really finding anything to address the issue of single dosing a vario. Vario owners thread is much to long (got to page 36 I think) and thread hijacks to follow. I've been pre-weighing each shot, rather than using the timer function, to allow switching beans easily from decaf for the better half. I don't really have an issue, per se, but wonder what I'm missing by not having the weight in the hopper from the column of beans (to make grind faster and finer). With other grinders, usually single dosing involves using the tamper as a weight on the column of beans. This can't be done with the vario without some sort of mod to push the safety switch. I could just fill up the hopper and give it a go, to see the difference (and likely what I'll do anyway), but just wondering if anyone else has any insight into this issue with single dosing. Does it make any difference to the grind quality?

Whenever I have single dosed in the Vario I needed to grind slightly finer the when beans are in the hopper, other then that I notice no difference in the cup.
That's what I was hoping I'd hear. I never thought too much about it until looking into robur results w/ single dosing where I've seen some indicating only getting gushers w/ single dosing w/o the extra weight. I'm not sure if the grind quality was improved w/ finer grinding or adding the extra weight, but made me wonder if I was going about it wrong be single dosing. In addition, with the small grind retention w/ the vario I don't get too fussed about purging the extra ~.5 grinds when starting a new session each morning, or clearing the chute unless I plan on being extra picky that day. I suppose clearing the chute would be a valuable step, but I just grind into the bin and dump into basket, so never really noticed what was left behind in the chute....should look at that next time.
