My 6 year old EM480 has passed its used by date and will be replacing our 6910 with most likely a Giotto Rocket. I cannot buy the Giotto until the house renovation is complete next year. However, I should be able to seek in a new grinder now (especially after I place some pebbles into the EM480). I am look for a grinder that will suit the Giotto, dose-less, easy to use-set with auto measured grind dose (I am away for half the year and my technophobic wife will be the operator) and in the range of $400-700. Does the Compak K3T fit the requirements?

I have the Smart Grinder, and I think it looks very nice next to my BDB, and I get excellent espresso out of it. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it. I frequently want to go in between steps, and it is too inconsistent with grind volume for me to trust that it will work for my wife.

A side note here.
I inspect tools that are used in aircraft manufacture and I have not yet seen anything that truly is idiot proof! NEVER UNDERESTAMATE THE ABILITY OF AN IDIOT TO MESS SOMETHING UP!

So true that idiots are everywhere (myself included). Anyway, all grinders are mechanical and sooner or later something might break or need servicing. I have never encountered service from any company regardless of industry that is better then Baratza's. I have heard that Kyle and his team is legendary in taking care of their customers but it wasn't until recently that I needed to take advantage. No receipt, No questions, no problem and no costs incurred by myself with shipping etc. I was a nobody that sent a simple email and got the royal treatment twice. This is why I will highly recommend the Vario or Preciso. If your budget permits and you want something that is commercial industry standard go for a used Mazzer Major or Super Jolly with new burrs. With your budget it'll probably be used and abused but it"ll still be bulletproof.
