How often should one replace (or sharpen) the burrs on a Mazzer mini? I have had my mini E for just over two years and I average 2 shots per day. Thanks.

I believe the Mazzer burrs are quoted at a life expectancy of 300kg --- more than 600lbs. How many pounds have you run through? I bet less than 100. Plenty of time before you need to reinvest.

Would a better question be: What are the symptoms of needing burr replacement?
I'm certainly not about to count, or try to remember, how may pounds of beans have gone through my grinder. I'd rather just know what to look for as a clue that they need to be replaced....

This is an elementary school, intro to algebra, problem. "Al has a grinder that will need replacement burrs after he has ground 200 Kilos of coffee. If it takes 14g to make a double shot, and one gram of coffee is wasted, how long before Al will have to change his burrs if he has two double shots every day?" At that rate, every year Al grinds around eleven kilos of coffee (30 grams x 365 days = 1095 g or 10.95 Kilo) every year. At just over two years, I'd estimate that singforsupper has ground around twenty-four Kilos of coffee, being generous, on his mini. This means that his mini is doing less work every year than most grinders in even the slowest of shops are doing every month, and some shops will do every week. You should replace your burrs every ten years, though, just as a habit. That simple equation could be reproduced by the week if you don't really have a daily regular habit. I'll have two a day, sometimes three, and sometimes none, at my house. (I have a Sylvia and Rocky at the GF's house), but I'll go through at least ten deep doubles (21g, with waste) or shallow triples, whatever you prefer to call the 18G basket, a week. That puts me in the same area as singforsupper, but the Major's need a bit less frequent attention.

I will give it a shot. When you disassemble the grinder for cleaning and the burrs no longer will catch your fingernail and it just slides over the edge of the burr, it might be time to replace them. That is the more or less objective test I use when looking at used grinders as to if I should change the burrs. YMMV.

I wrote to Macap through their online "contact us" page, and they got back to me very fast. They recommend burr replacement after about 200kg, which I guess is about the norm, huh? I'll still try the fingernail catch technique, but it sounds like I have at least another couple/few years on my older grinder.
