I recently upgraded from a Rocky to a Mazzer Mini. The only way I can get a decent shot is by grinding my coffee very close (one notch away) to the zero setting (where the burrs start to touch). See picture. I am aware that some factors may affect the grind setting such as coffee type, darkness of roast, time since it was roasted, humidity, etc... However, I am somewhat surprised that I have such little room to adjust.

are you sure that the burrs are touching at that setting? on my super jolly, im usually 8-12 notches past where the burrs touch. also with the grinder off, if i go finer about 4 more notches, my ring wont turn any further. (make sure there are no beans between the burrs when you do this)

Espresso: Rocket R58 Grinder: Mazzer Mini E Type A

I have a Mazzer Mini Electronic Type A and I've found the factory grind setting mark is pretty darn close for me. I typically stay within a quarter inch of that setting when I am dialed in. My machine is new, with only about 500 shots reading on the electronic meter.
Your experience was the same as mine when I went from a stepped grinder to the Mazzer. After I used it for a while it settled in quite nicely. Now I have a permanent marker point set to the starting point of my favorite coffee. Now I can take the top burr out for cleaning, put it all back together, and my marked point will still be pretty close. Once you get really familiar with it, you can pretty much guess where to set it as the coffee ages.
