I'm looking at the Baratza Encore and Virtuoso. I wonder if it's worth splitting for the Virtuoso. . . . I saw the Crew Review, and read the forums here. The forum reviews are all over the place, but other resources hold Baratza in high regard. My machine (in transit) is a Gaggia Classic.
For espresso, you will want the Preciso or Vario. You need the fine adjustment of the Preciso, the Virtuoso does not have small enough steps. Preciso or Vario refurb from Baratza.com. This is covered in many threads and seems the consensus.

Well it is true that higher precision is desirable for espresso, yet I think it's still considered a little controversial whether the Encore (or Virtuoso) can make do for espresso.
The people who claim it can work, own one. The people who claim it cannot, do not own one.
One important difference between the Encore and the other models, is that the Encore grinds much slower. The Virtuoso and up are very fast grinders, right up there with the Vario and maybe a tad faster. Baratza's web site has the numbers.

Greetings, I would like to add this Encore to my gift want list this year. A few places have the Encore and the Encore new and improved listed. Does anyone know the differences (if any) between the regular Encore and the new and improved Encore? Is there a good way to tell them apart? Thank you for helping me.

I just received an email with this answer in case someone else is searching out this information. I was told that there is only 1 Encore model and that production has not changed on this model since its release.
