So, I'm looking at buying a used Super Jolly. It was used in a restaurant (not a cafe) for a while, and is in supposedly perfect working condition. I'll probably end up replacing the burrs anyways. However, it seems to be an older model than one can find online - it's missing the light on the lower right front of the machine. Does anyone know what the differences are between this version, and the current one? Any tips for buying used SJs? Thanks!

Manual maybe instead of an auto, just guessing. It looks pretty clean in that one pic. If the dumb thing runs good (does not sound waanky or stink like the windings are on fire) throw a set of burs in it and you will likely die it does. :0)

New, old, same grinder, slightly different case. Both built like brick outhouses. It is hard to tell from the pic, looking at the knob/switch, it seems to be a timer not automatic model, the timer has just two words written on the control while the automatic has off, on and start, three words.
It has the stainless doser not the al one (they changed about '96 or '97 from memory) so it is newer than that, they went to the shorter foot style about '02 or '03 (again from memory). The first two numbers of the serial number give you the mfg year.
New burrs are about $50 and you likely as not want to replace the bean hopper with one from a mini, possibly even the small mini bean hopper, about $35. It makes the grinder much more home friendly.

I'm planning on going hopperless (I've got a spare plastic 58mm to prevent jumping beans, as many have suggested). I only have 18" of counter clearance, so that seems to be my best option. I've heard some talk about potential burr misalignment in used Mazzers - is the only way to check for that the magic marker test?

I have been inside a lot of Mazzer grinders and I have yet to find any "burr missalignment"
The only way they can not be right is if someone
Bent the motor shaft (you will have more problems than missalinged burrs if this happened)
cross threaded the upper carrier (again more problems than burrs, carriers are expensive even if you can fix the threads in the body, probably though they will also be junk)
or installed new burrs and did not clean the mating surfaces properly and have a coffee crumb or two under the burr.
If the motor turns on, the sound is smooth, there is no vibration and the motor coasts to a stop, not a rapid stop,
Then most likely the grinder is OK and only needs new burrs.
