I used to own rancilio rocky and thought it was a pretty solid grinder. But I can't help but wonder if there's a better grinder out there for my needs. I'm a french press guy, so I don't need a doser or any other feature. I just need a machine that provides maximum uniformity of grind. I've searched the reviews on this site, and I don't see that many machines that fit what I'm looking for. Would a grindmaster outperform a rocky? Any other machines I should look at?

I'm sure someone will chime in here with experience with the grinders you recommend but for now.... Are you using for press only. What is your usage like? On the surface, it seems like you are going a bit overboard with the grindmaster.....Pardon my ignorance, but isn't that a bulk grinder? If so, it is made for grinding large quantities with grind retention of several grams. If grinding a pound, 10g lost isn't a big deal. If grinding 21g for press, a 10g retention is unacceptable. Why not use something more designed for home use? Ie Baratza encore (much cheaper than your budget). If you are set on commercial grade, then I believe (please correct me as this is just what I remember from memory, not experience) that the bunn grinders have much less retention; something like 1g.

If you are NOT going to use it for espresso, do not buy an espresso grinder, they are fantastic at grinding for espresso but not so much for other methods, such is the Rocky. The biggest exception to this is the Vario, it seems to be able to grind for both ends of the spectrum with equal ease and quality. I do not own one or have ever used one but several members here that I respect a lot, like them very much.
