Yes. This is how many people grind every single shot. Most of us with big titan grinder do this because 1)its consistent, shot to shot and 2)using these huge grinders in the home requires some different usage techniques. Titan conicals can hold as much as 50grams or more of wasted, stale coffee in the burr chamber if using the grinder with a loaded hopper. Single dosing ensures no waste, consistent dose, every single shot.
When it comes to titan level grinders, there is two general ways to use them, and in effect, two different types of grinders. Grinders like the Mahlkonig K30, Compak K10Fresh and Mazzer Robur-E, are three very popular Titan grinders. These grinds require that the hopper has at least a couple shots worth of beans. 1/3full is better, and if you drink the same coffee all the time, fill her up if you like. The time based grinding requires this to function properly.
Grinders like the Compak K10, Mazzer Major and Mazzer Kony, also popular titan choices, have dosers. THESE grinders work ideally by weighing out, per dose, the proper amount of beans, adding them to the grinder, and grinding them through completely, sweeping the chute out and ensuring to get every last bit you can get. This allows the use of different coffees in the same session, and allows for almost no waste. It IS a hair more tedious. This is how I make coffee.
--The Vario, W or not, is like the first kind of grinder. It wants beans in the hopper. Otherwise the timer will be useless, as it wont be able to give you the same amount of coffee each time. You use a .1gram scale to calibrate the timer once you have dialed in your grind setting, and it should stay on point, needing only tenth of a second adjustments as the week goes on.
Does it really matter than much on an espresso if the grind is the same and the grams vary by 3 or 4 per pod - for a mixed drink that would be catostrophic everything is in exact ratio's (especially for high end tiki drinks) however some drinks you can be a bit off and it doesnt matter like a mojito

The difference of .2grams will make a difference, one you will see(the shot can run faster or slower), and one you will taste. 18grams doesn't mean sorta kinda around 18grams, it means 18 GRAMS, on the nose. This is why a 0.1gram scale is vital to the production of exceptional espresso.

All this talk of beans in the hopper, the hopper is tiny, i go through about 7 a week! ok, maybe thats a bit of an exaggeration, but am i right to assume that the hopper discussion is only relevant to someone who leaves the beans in there for quite some time?
I just got the Vario-W (Just unpacked it), and am wondering if i made a mistake buying it.
It seems like it will make only a slightly better grind with a lot more work.
Call me lazy, but I really like the Vario, straight into the Pf.
Right now Im in between machines so only have a Silvia, but I guess ill find out in the next few days if my thought process was wrong or not.
