I saw the Jolly today and did not buy it. Decided to mull it over and get opinions from all of you. It comes from a school coffee shop that ran for 4 years or so. It was in my opinion really being used.... like cross-country back and fourth 2 times! I say this because the machine they were using this for is a La Marzocco 4-Group Espresso Cappuccino Machine. There were a few scuffs, but nothing too dramatic. I would change the hopper to a mini-hopper so that it takes up less space and of course change the burrs. He wants $350 for the machine. It is a 1997 unit. Is this price worth if versus buying a brand new Compac 3 doserless grinder at Chris' Coffee for $529 less a $75 discount he offered me since I'd also be purchasing the Quick Mill Silvano.
Oh, and there is more....Just found another Mazzer Super Jolly Grinder for $250 and the burrs were changed in November. This is a 1995 machine. Should I go for this?

My offer still stands to rework it for you for free, provided you come over for coffee and friendship! That is labor only though, you need the parts. The average price of a used SJ in good operating condition is about $350 and to that you add burrs etc. '95 era machines are still built bullet tough and there should be no issues if it just turns on and does not make any abnormal noises such as grinding metal parts etc.
Just to add fuel to the fire, I have a grinder I used at work for a few years and since I took my work equipment home this is just sitting around. It is a N.S. MDX, new $1K or so, new burrs, clean and ready to work without a bean hopper though. Asking $350 but could do better I guess for a CG member.
Whatever you buy, I will give it a good going over for you with you there to learn all about it.
The $250 SJ is also a good deal, to that add burrs at ~$50. A mini hopper is about $30 I think I remember online but could be wrong about that.

So I got my used mazzer and the burrs look and feel sharp. The previous owner says that they were changed in November and were not used much. I bought new duranium burrs anyway to have. Only thing about the grinder I was ticked about is that the on switch knob is cracked on the inside which means that without a wrench I can't start the thing. I love how quiet the machine is!!
Espressoparts.com seems to have one for $13.95 which I plan on buying, but seems a little high for such a small piece of plastic.
As far as the tall hopper, well I tried using a canning funnel and though it fits it does not work as smooth as when I used the intended large hopper, so I suppose the mazzer short 2/3 hopper is the one to buy.
Lastly, its a bit scuffed so I think I may attempt to paint it as it looks like an old man next to my new Quick Mill Silvano. lol! Suggestions?
Oh and yes, Mr. W Parrish, I will take you up on your offer soon and look forward to meeting you. My kids are now calling me a "coffee geek"! :-) Not the case though.

New burrs are a given but if they are sharp enough to catch on a a fingernail with NO slipping off skipping they are serviceable Oh, I know it is a common thing for people to do, they do it all the time but there is no H in my name.:-) ;-)
