Hello!! I've always used cafe style cups. I am purchasing new cups for the upcoming South West Regional Barista Competion and I was considering ordering tulip style cups. Is there a drastic difference when pouring latte art? Is one more difficult than the other? Does anyone know the history of why the two styles exist? Thanks!

This is only my opinion; you're welcome to disagree =)
While some great latte art can be poured in a tulip cup, unless your technique employs very compact details in one space, the best bet is to stick with cafe (bowl) style cups. You can create such massive rosettes and hearts; a tulip style just won't allow this.
Crema and microfoam don't blend the same way in a tulip cup. For me, the best latte art emphasizes the bitter crema on the first sip.
