I have never tried to pull a shot with a naked, bottomless portafilter. Is anyone aware of a source to match an older 2 switch Europicolla?

I'd just get a hole saw that will fit inside.

Yes, finding an old portafilter and cutting it out is one way to go.  I found one cheap for my Millenium group Europiccola and drilled/sawed it out.  Lots of work.  There have been reports as well that the sides of a sawed out portifliter for machines like La Pavoni levers tend to be thin and can warp with too much pressure.  So far my naked pf hasn't warped.

There's a guy who turns naked portafilters out of brass that fit Olympia Cremina 67s.  I think the same guy makes them to fit vintage LaPavonis.  You can find them here:

They're not cheap but the one I've got for a Cremina fits very well and is a solid hunk of brass.  If you're going to use the naked portfilter a lot this one doesn't look like it could possibly warp out of shape.  And, unless you've got a metal lathe or something, it'll save you a lot of nasty drilling and sawing if you try to make your own.

I have one for my Cremina. Thew older Pavonis are also 49mm, and the PF will fit perfectly.
They are not inexpensive, but mine is, to me INDISPENSABLE.
