I don't like the plain-metal base in contrast with the pretty chrome on the rest of the machine. I know they sell separate chrome bases like this one, but, those appear to be for the newer machines.
According to orphanespresso.com, the pre-millenium editions and post-millenium editions have almost entirely interchangeable parts except for a few gaskets. Does that mean this newer chrome base will work for my old machine? I'm not convinced, they look a little different. Considering the $100 price tag I'd like to be certain first.
Anyone ever seen two of them beside each other and could tell me if their bases are different?

Have you asked Stefano about it? He's very knowledgeable about the history and parts of these La Pavoni machines.
You could also check out this Home-Barista thread on a history of the changes in the La Pavoni machines click here which seems to indicate that at one time there was a hole in the middle of the base under the drip tray but the new base has no such hole.

The later bases have the plastic removable drip tray. Much better. I also think from memory the later chrome bases are interchangeable and just use the newer push-on plastic bottom thingy. I'm an all chrome guy but there is appeal in keeping original although mopping out the drips is no appeal :-(
