I have the 49mm group. So I measured the basket with a plastic caliper and the inside reads somewhere in the range of 49.5 to 50mm. I think. Its hard to be very accurate with a plastic caliper because there is so much give.
My question is what do people find the best fit to be? Would 49mm be good or should I go with something more like 49.4?

49,5 for the original la pavoni lever pre millennium with a good caliper is correct the tampers that we sell for 49mm are the motta exactly 48.83 the generic one around 49mm (plus minus few decimal of a millimeter) both of then are close enough to the edge of the basket that are slipping in and out easily, keep in mind that you are dealing with decimal of ONE MILLIMETER see picture

It definitely won't reach the bottom of an elektra double basket, but I can't imagine a scenario where that would be necessary. There is the SLIGHTEST bit of clearance so it doesn't stick or bind against the side. I took some pictures to show you how far it goes it goes into the basket. When I pack the basket with 16g, the base doesn't even go all the way into the basket.
