i found this espresso machine for sale at a garage sale for 100$ last year.i have always wanted to learn how to make my own espresso so i didnt hesitate.i took it to a place and had all the gaskets replace and the reservoir cleaned.i have no clue what i am doing have played with it every day trying to get a good espresso.they taste pretty good but i dont think i am getting enough creme.i use distilled water at first as directed by the guy that did the refurbishing but read somewhere it is better to use filtered or spring water so i am now using brits filtered water.i have tried at different temps getting the most creme at 170 but i read it should be 190-210 f.i have also tried holding the lever up for different times ,5-12 sec. and depressing at various speed.i also tried "the fellini maneuver."still very little creme.i have been using that pre-espresso ground illy which is probably sacrilege but i am hesitant to spend the money unless i can get it down.so i guess my question is ,is the grind the problem?if so what grinder?i could spend around 450$.how is that rocky ranchillo?i would appreciate any feedback.jay

Can you get fresh coffee from a local roaster? Using pre-ground Illy, you'll have an uphill struggle to get decent crema on a consistent basis.

Also, get your temperature up to the 190-210 range. Pull the lever up and wait until you see the first drops appearing in your cup. This should take about six seconds. Once you see the drops, start your pull.

well i tried to buy a shots worth of fresh ground from starbucks and they looked at me like i was crazy.i told them to just charge me for an espresso but give me the grounds.they kept saying they sell it buy the pound.the people behind me were getting irritated so i just said forget it.any grinder recommendations between 300-450$.thanks jay

Maybe start with a manual grinder. There are several in the $40-$85 range. Use the the rest of the savings (say $300) to periodically order a 5lb bag of freshly roasted espresso blend. Store 4lbs in your freezer in Mason jars as soon as the coffee arrives.
Roasters like Red Bird sell 5 lb bags for about $52, including shipping.
Once you're pulling good shots, THEN explore a good espresso grinder, like a Baratza Preciso, or Vario, or a used Mazzer SJ.
