Your dose weight / shot weight is the brew ratio. Consistency means hitting the same shot weight in the same amount of time for a given dose, or at least within an acceptable personal margin of error that you have established by tasting the shots. On an LP, the group temperature plays a huge role in this. I would also recommend at least a temp strip on the group:

I have heard recommendations to weigh the dose several times, but I've always thought that seems a little OCD. I guess I could try it a few times. The pressure in the boiler is a direct representation of the temp of the water, no? I'm no genius but I remember a few formulas from Chemistry I that explained the relationship between temp, volume and pressure. If the volume is static then the other two are directly related, no? I had one of those little strips when I first got this machine. It was cold before I turned it on. Once I turned it on it got real hot.
I pull awesome shots out of this thing. It took me years to do it. But, the preinfusion still perplexes me. Sometimes it saturates in and I get good pressure immediately. Sometimes it takes 3/4 of the pull before I get any pressure. Lately I just keep pumping it until I get real pressure and then pull and the handle feel, volume, and shots have been nice. Maybe that's my solution, but I've always feared disturbing the puck. I guess I could go naked portafilter or weigh shots. Thanks for the input.
