In my case, with a thrifted DeLonghi Bar 140, I had a pressurized filter basket instead of portafilter.  There was only a single hole and a rubber crema enhancer part that wrapped around a metal disc.

I found I was able to pick up a 2 cup filter basked for an Elektra a Leva and get it to fit in place of the original.  I married this with a 49 mm tamper.   A larger filter basket from a Krups steam toy (triple or larger) also fit after I modded a spare DeLonghi portafilter (cut out the screw with a dremel cut-off wheel) but I don't like that basket.  I'll probably end up converting that spare portafilter for Naked extractions.  (There's also another thrifted spare machine that came attached to the second Portafilter in the garage).

The Elektra a Leva basket fits the portafilter, but gets stuck on the gasket and is hard to remove.  I haven't yet looked at modding or replacing the gasket to resolve this issue.

All this craftiness was in vain until I picked up a passable grinder, though; a Kyocera ceramic hand grinder which made all the difference.

I found a review talking about modding the Lello Ariete Prestige:  "So overall I think the machine works great, especially if you remove the black pressurizer from the portafilter and also buy a new basket - this mod converts it to a non pressurized portafilter that creates a superior shot. Just my $.02."  No specific reference to what filter basked would fit this machine, though.

I did see a tip that the Lello Ariete Prestige is also known as the Morphy Richards Roma (47505).  You could poke around their site (http://www.morphyrichards.co.uk) for more info; looks like the filter baskets are normal, not pressurized, but I don't see the plastic piece you have in the user guide from that site for the Roma.

Good luck,

-Chris

Some espresso machines have a pressurized basket using a spring-loaded assembly or a pinhole restriction.  If you hold the basket up to the light, can you see daylight through the filter screen?

@mgorman Did you try it without the plastic ppf piece? What were your results?

I never got the chance.  The steam wand on the Lello 1385 stopped working after my first cup of steamed milk.  I returned the machine and purchased a Rancilio Silvia.  That is what I should have done in the first place. :)

Thanks!

I contacted Lello today and they do not have a non-pressurized portafilter available for purchase for the 1375, however it does seem easy enough to remove the plastic piece and use a non-pressurized basket like the Saeco Double Portafilter:

I'm waiting to hear from espressoparts.com regarding the basket diameter size to make sure it fits.

I'll give it a shot once my 49mm RSVP Stainless Steel Tamper arrives.  Thanks for the update mgorman.

Another rebadge: Sunbeam Cafe Crema EM4800C

I am still looking for a non-ppf basket for this machine.  Supposedly the Saeco basket is 53mm so it won't fit.  The double basket that comes with the Lello is 49mm.  I suspect a 49mm-50mm basket would work if there is a replacement or aftermarket available somewhere.  Other than removing the screw to remove the black plastic piece from the portafilter how did you remove it without damaging it?  Is it necessary to remove the plastic piece or is the non-ppf basket all that is required?  Any info anyone can suggest/provide is much appreciated, thanks.

I have a delonghi ec270 on order.  Kind of regretting buying a pressurized pf now.  Anyone have this machine and know if it's easily modifiable?   I'm wonder if all lower end consumer Delonghi pf's are the same and I'll have the same issues and the poster above.   Any advice is helpful, thanks.

At least one poster on a vendor's site review said the La Pavoni 2 cup MP-68 Millenium Edition Europiccola/Professional non-pressurized basket works as a replacement for the Lello Ariete Cafe Prestige pressurized basket:

Great upgrade for Lello Ariete Cafe Prestige  01/31/2009
Reviewer: Conan Kinsey   (2) from Rochester, NY US

I decided to try this basket with my Lello Ariete Cafe Prestige, since the factory baskets are pressurized and produce a fake crema. The grounds do not come out factory basket as a nice puck because of the pressurization. I ordered this since it was the same size basket (51mm) to try out a nice non-pressurized basket. This one fits exactly in the basket, but the lip needs to be flattened to fit the group head. After that slight modification it works great! No more sloppy, soupy pucks. The machine now produces nice pucks and real crema! You will need a grinder to get the right grind for this. I use to Lelit PL53 from this site.

I've read on this board that other people have had success using this basket as a non-pressurized basket replacement as well with Krups and other machines.  However any further required portafilter modification is machine specific.

I received the La Pavoni 2-cup MP-68 today and yes it fits the Lello portafilter perfectly--it's about .5mm tighter than the PPF basket that comes stock. It's a pretty snug fit but one can insert and remove it from the PF without too much effort.  Flattened MP-68 lip, removed plastic disk from portafilter, with the Pavoni basket inserted into the portafilter it seals into gasket group head without issue, Ran one double through and it works fantastic, even better crema than with the stock PPF basket, the coffee also tastes richer and the used grinds come out with one shake of the PF as a puck, WOW, why they make those PPF setups I have no idea.  This simple mod kicks up the output quality of the espresso of the Lello Cafe Ariete Prestige bigtime-I see some tiger markings!

I've done the same with the same basket (actually 2 identical baskets with different size holes) to my Cuisenart EM-100. It will actually make a 'good' espresso. I have the machine for sale currentl for about what I have into the baskets and custom machined rosewood tamper. I'm actually thinking that this machine will migrate over to my cousins in Jan/Feb so I can make decent coffee over at his place if I'm on the other side of town. The MP-68 isnt a cheap basket due to so few existing, $30 approx, considering 2 of them = 1/2 the Cuiesenarts costs now... Silvia!!
