Subject: Steam LEVER upgrade for Oscar

The meat of my thoughts are down there on post 4

---

Hey fellow CGs.   So, i'm getting sick of having to turn the knob so many times to get the steam to open and close.  It really makes it a pain to stop the steam exactly when i need it to stop.

I'm looking at parts from other NS machines for the levers and differences in valves etc.

Ideally, i'd like to be able to use the existing steam valve and fit a lever and fork from another machine to it.   If that isnt possible, possibly swapping the entire valve body with one that fits Oscar.

At this point, i think i need to find out the exact thread size of the oscar valve body and find out what other bodies are using.  Also look at possible parts from other machines.  From parts diagrams, it looks like i'll need the lever, a fork, steam valve screw, and possibly other misc parts.     I also know that likely the parts wont fit properly onto the plastic front cover of oscar and that will probably need to be modified to allow it to fit.

Here is a parts diagram of the Aurelia to give an idea of the parts associated with the steam lever.   Click Here (www.nuovadistribution.com)
And here's the oscar diagram.   Click Here (www.nuovadistribution.com)

Here's a complete assembly...i wonder if it can just be screwed right in to work.  I'll have to ask EP to see if they have any info.   http://www.espressoparts.com/S_306?&search_id=1931485

Has anyone attempted this?  Any thoughts or advice?

hmm looks like the attachment from the valve to the machine on both aurelia and oscar are the same(part# 07300110 steam tap spring holder).  This seems like a positive thing as this probably means that a direct swap is likely possible.

checking more similarities between the aurelia and oscar steam valve.

more positive info, the steam wand should fit as the retaining nut and all the hardware between the valve and the wand are exactly the same parts.

also, the spring, washer and steam tap piston(these are ALL the parts between the valve body and the steam tap spring holder that attaches to the machine) are the same.

my guess so far is that only the valve body and the parts forward are needed.  *EDITED* added prices from NS price list

07300354 valve body  16.50  ("z" 5.28 for stainless steel part??)
02280014 two silicone gaskets  1.98 x2
07300221 steam valve inox screw  12.30
00000118 SS HEX SOCKET CAP SCREW M4x12  1.40
08000015 SEEGER  RING RS 5 STAINLESS STEEL  1.40
07300810 VALVE SHAFT  2.70
07300355 TAP FORK  8.20
05000815 STEAM LEVER HANDLE  18.50

Total for parts  $64.96

hmmm...

as far as hacking into the front cover...im thinking it'll just need a couple clean cuts vertically so that the lever has room to move.  this is just a guess tho.  If it's as easy as i'm thinking, reattaching the knob should be easy and the cut should not be noticeable with the knob back  on if you choose to go back.

There's always Insta-Morph if you really want to customize (or need to repair) the front panel.

cool stuff...the 140 degree limitation might be a problem as i know the brass of the steam valve body pretty much touches the front plastic panel.

order for parts placed through espressoparts.  came out to 84.06 because i added a few extra parts so that i dont have to take apart my current valve to reuse the parts from it.  specifically they were " Nuova Simonelli Appia/Aurelia/Mac/Premier/Program Steam Valve Rebuild Kit (SKIT3)"($17.50) which includes the two silicone gaskets(would have been $2.38) from the original list along with the spring, washer and piston that i would have had to use from my original valve.  Also i ordered "Nuova Simonelli Steam Valve to Boiler Fitting (S_133)"($4.50) which is the coupling fitting from the valve to the machine.  This also would have had to be removed from the old valve.

here's the full order along with the espressoparts part numbers:

Name Qty Unit Price Total Price
'Aurelia/Mac 2000/Program VIP/' Steam/water Piston Stem (S_254) 1 13.53 13.53
Nuova Simonelli 'Aurelia/Appia' Steam Valve Lever (S_442) 1 18.50 18.50
Nuova Simonelli 'Aurelia/Mac 2000' Steam Valve Body (S_257) 1 16.50 16.50
Nuova Simonelli Appia/Aurelia/Mac/Premier/Program Steam Valve Rebuild Kit (SKIT3) 1 17.50 17.50
Nuova Simonelli New Style Steam Valve Fork (S_66A) 1 8.20 8.20
Nuova Simonelli Steam Valve Lever Pin (S_86) 1 1.00 1.00
Nuova Simonelli Steam Valve Lever Pin C-clip (S_85) 2 1.54 3.08
Nuova Simonelli Steam Valve to Boiler Fitting (S_133) 1 4.50 4.50
Solenoid/Faema Sight Glass Face Screw (F_258) 1 1.25 1.25

There are similar products with higher temp ratings - like Plast-Aid, or Sugru.
