I cleaned off any residual thread lock sealant from the knob and the insert then checked that the insert could be easily replaced to normal position before resealing it. I used a screwdriver marked with masking tape to make sure the insert was fully seated (make sure to get your eye down to level when checking this - to avoid parallax error). Of course, you could probably install the knob and see if the groove on the plunger shaft protrudes to where it ought to before making it "permanent". Once I was comfortable with everything, I applied a little thread lock sealant and re-installed the insert. The repaired knob goes back into service tomorrow.

When I ordered my custom knobs from Dave Stephens he offered to either use my OEM knobs (which essentially meant destroying them for the brass parts) or order a fresh set for the same purpose. I am very glad I had him order the fresh set, as this allowed me a "standard" to compare to and, at the same time, something to use while I was reinstalling the insert.
