Hi
I have searched high and low for some help on fitting a new group gasket.
I removed the old one, slicing my finger in the process, but could not get the gasket to fit. I ended up with it depressed fully all the way around apart from a small section, say between 6 and 7 o’clock, still poking up. In the end my efforts lead me to knackering the new gasket. I have ordered a new one but before I fit it can anyone offer anyone?
Please help as I am getting bored of drinking tea.
FYI this was the gasket I brought. Click Here (www.ebay.co.uk) I assume this was the correct one.

Thanks for the reply. Having watched a couple of videos on You Tube I am wondering if the gasket I have it too small, it's such a tight fit. I am going to get an official Gaggia replacement and see if that makes life easier.

If it's not fully seating, and poking "up", it's probably too big, not too small? I'm picturing too much rubber in there but can't be sure from your description. Maybe have a second look.
FYI - It's fairly easy to remove the single screw for the shower screen and then two 5mm allen screws for the next piece. It'll make things easier to get at and see what's going on, and the same for any future gasket removal. Also a good idea to do this occasionally to allow some cleaning to be done as well.
This: Click Here (www.ebay.com) and the 9mm versions from the same vendor are what I normally bought when I took it on myself as a hobby to buy and repair old Gaggia's. These always worked well for me for diameter. It was however a guess as to which would fit correctly for thickness, not a fault of the gaskets or vendor, just a confusing Gaggia thing I never quite figured out leaving me to trial & error on that part.

My gasket just started leaking the last couple days, also. It's probably been about 3-4 months old now, so I had to order one. I had a spare that I got from WholeLatteLove, but I've misplaced it since. So I just ordered one from EspressoParts. They have 2 for Gaggia machines (http://www.espressoparts.com/G_55):
71x56x9mm and 71x55x10mm
According to their website, the 71x56x9mm is the proper one. They note that the part number is NG01/001, which might not mean anything to anyone, but according to the Gaggia Classic parts list (Document ER0182), part 21 is NG01/001. So, I assume this is the correct gasket to use.
However, there is someone on EspressoParts who commented that it's not the correct gasket to use, since the Classic uses a 8.5mm gasket. I hope it's the correct gasket as well.

The easiest way to install a GH gasket, apply a small amount of food safe lube to the outside of the gasket, place it on top of the PF without a basket then lock the PF into the machine and turn the handle to cam the PF into the GH. Remove the PF then put the basket in and repeat. Done.

I found my spare gasket and installed it. It didn't take too much effort to remove it by the way. Just FYI, my Gaggia Classic is on 24x7 and the gasket is about 3-4 months old. It started leaking a few days ago, so it was definitely time to change it.
I first removed the shower screen, then the water dispersion plate (a total of 3 screws; a philips and 2 sockets). I've heard many horror stories about people removing the gasket in many pieces, then having to scrape and clean it out so I wanted to remove it in one piece if possible.
Ultimately, it is easiest to remove all the water, unplug everything and put the machine on its back. I don't have an awl so I used my handy utility knife (with a 1/8" thick blade). I just poked it, wiggled it a little to get it to lift away from the group head, then worked it loose all the way around. It DID take some effort, but it was not a horror story.
Installing it was pretty easy. It was a snug (not tight) fit and it went in nicely. I did burn myself a couple times, but that's because I was eager and took it for granted that everything was still hot. I did install it round-side in, since the original gasket came out that way.
Here is a picture of the old gasket, next to the new one. I didn't have my calipers handy but it is definitely, visually bigger and harder than the new one. I assume this is due to the machine being on 24x7 with the PF in the group head for most of its life.
The PF now sits in the 7 o'clock position, whereas 4-5 o'clock with the old gasket. But, no more leaks!

Again, I didn't get a change to measure the new gasket, since I was too excited about testing out my new pressure gauge and pull a few new shots with my newly adjusted machine.
However, I believe the 9mm thick gasket is the correct gasket to use. There is a marking on the new gasket that says "9", or maybe "6" but that would be a bit more random than "9".
This is the gasket I got from WholeLatteLove. I have one (9mm) coming from EspressoParts and I'll check to see if that one also has a "9" marked on it.

I just realized I never reported my findings on the new gasket from EspressoParts. The new gasket from EP did not have any markings on it, so the "9" may or may not mean anything.
