I use two GE Smartwater filters in parallel.  They're cheap, effective, available in many stores, and require no maintenance.  I used 2 in parallel because the max flow rate of one filter is 0.5 gallons per minute, a bit low IMHO as the flow rate drops week by week as the filter fills up with sediment. But running two in parallel doubles that.   I have 3.5 months on this setup so far and it's working fine.

Hey Rick,

I am confused - how can adding a filter double the flow rate?  Wouldn't adding resistance to the water line decrease flow rate?

As for your drilling through the backsplash idea goes - I wish I had thought of that.  I have a rather ugly hole in my counter under my machine.  Oh well, the 1980's retro countertop in my kitchen has to go sometime anyways.

Yeah plumbing through your splash back is definately the way to go (especially if you have granite bench tops and a tiled splash back like me!).

To do this I removed the grout from the tile directly behind my machine and removed it including the drywall it was glued to. This gave me a large access hole to locate the drain and supply hoses making it so much easier for roughing in all the plumbing within the wall. I then cut a slot at the bottom of the tile just big enough for the plumbing, re-attached the tile/drywall to the timber stud using liquid nails and re-grouted. To finish of the installation I bought a electrical blanking plate whigh I also slotted and attached to the tile using silicone.

The only caution is to make sure you have sufficient drop between your drain and the exit throught the splash back otherwise pooling will occur and your drain will not be very efficient. With mine I am able to run hot water from the tap from my Wega directly into the drip tray all day long without ever backing up.

Regards
Doug.

If they're in series, the "resistance" is approximately doubled, and the flow would decrease by ~ 50%.

But if they're connected in parallel, the water pressure acting on both filters is the same, so the flow rate through each filter is the same as if there is only one filter.  Add them together and you've got double the flow rate.

Good point, Doug.  Recently mine began backing up for the first time since it was installed in June.  I found that there was a low point in the drain line where the line drooped down under the counter on its way to the sink drain.  Crud had collected at this low point and slowed the flow to a trickle, and it backed up while I was backflushing my machine with Purocaf.  I rearranged the drain line to eliminate the low point and flushed a tsp. of purocaf down the drain through the drip tray.  This broke up the deposits and it's flowing smoothly again.

The slope of the drain between the machine and the hole in the backsplash is close to zero percent, so this is a minor weakness of the backsplash drain route.  The standard for plumbed drains in homes is a 2% slope, and the zero slope is bound to accumulate gunk in the line over time.  A tsp. of purocaf down the drain from time to time should help.

Welcome fellow WWDP members (and wannabes).

Current setting January 1, 2005 – closed OPV2, adjusted OPV1 to 9 bar initial pressure, adjusted OPV2 to eliminate a pressure creep past 9 bar.

I will do some taste testing later today.

sorry if this sounds like a silly question but how are you measuring your initial pressure (9 bar) I have a Astoria CKX which I believe is similar to yours in configuration but my pressure gauge only reads boiler pressure

Portafilter pressure gauge.  It has come in handy on many an occasion.

I have a Astoria CKX machine which I believe is very similar to the Mininova, I am thinking about adjusting the OPV but do not know where to start, is the OPV a threaded screw that you turn left or right, I am not sure what I should be looking for.
