Subject: Pasquini Livia will not prime. Help!

Hello, All. A quick call for your help before I call Pasquini or Illy for assistance.

Livia arrived today and after reading the instructions (I did, really), I filled water resevoir, and flipped the power switch on. Both the yellow heating element indicator light, and the green safety light briefly illuminated then went out.  The instructions say that both lights will stay on during the priming process. The pump vainly tried to draw water into the boiler, but nothing. I've tried several times now, but get the same result.

Livia owners, any advice?
Thanks much.

Simply lift the water tank and make sure the safty wire is in place.

Sounds like all saftey switches are working fine, if the pump works when you power on.  You probably either have a kinked hose or a clogged pump, which isn't uncommon.  Wait for someone to troubleshoot it with you or until a Livia expert posts.  I would tell you how to look to see but I've never had my mitts on one of those things.

If the green light won't come on, there's basically two sensors involved.  One is in the water reservior and the wire can be easily checked as previously mentioned.  The other is in the boiler itself.  If you filled the reservior with water that has no mineral content (such as distilled water) the sensor in the boiler won't work and will make the machine believe there's no water in the boiler which will shut the green light off.

One common failure item in the Livia is a transformer located inside the black control module inside the machine.  If the transformer fails, it will give the same symptoms you mentioned.  The transformer sometimes fails because it gets too hot.  The machines only have a thin fiber heat shield between the boiler and the control module.  Many people have installed a piece of aluminum backed fiberglass insulation to better protect the control module from the heat of the boiler.  The newer machines may have fixed this problem with better insulation, I don't know.  If your machine is new, it seems unlikely though still possible the transformer is your problem.  If it's under warranty, you might as well let them take care of it, although you'll have the hassle of shipping it.
