Hi...just received my new Rocky DL....I RFTM...so...because of my natural laziness, I'd like to ask a couple of questions rather than search...I beg for mercy from the CG court... 1) Is the finger gaurd the plastic piece held in with 3 screws?....should remove, eh? 2) Could someone direct me to the "snout mod"...I'd like to see what alternatives there are....lots of coffee trapped...not oily...a city + Kenya home roast... 3) What might I use to get under and into the spout to clean...a brush end would be good, I think...i tried a grapefruit knife, but I don't like the idea of inserting metal into a "live" appliance! 4) Though I've read millions (OK, maybe hundreds) of Rocky reviews, posts and praise/diatribes, is there anything offhand concerning the DL that might be helpful...a link would do fine..... Finally ...my favorite "Blurb" from the manual: section 4.1 "The manufacturer cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by unsuitable, erroneous or irrational use of the machine" Irrational....hey, we're Geeks!

Good choice, Rob! Here's my contribution "Modifying Rocky Doserless switch for continuous grind", which other members have improved on. I removed the finger guard and prodded the throat with a wood chopstick when beans got stuck. No other modifications.

Thanks Dan...the site seems slow tonight...didn't get email notifying me of your post... Would I need something curved to follow the shape of the snout to clean it? Oh...actually, I don't mind holding the switch...at least not yet!...because I paid Chris with Amex, I get an extra year's warranty...which i would certainly void if I modified the switch (I would assume)... I'll search for that snout mod... Thanks for yours...

Ok..I screwed up....removed the finger guard...actually, beans now have a place to get hung up where the screws are...can I apply tape...may put guard back... Problem....manual says to rotated hopper clockwise till i hear burrs touch...i didn't hear anything...felt it get tighter..figured i was at "0"...dialed to 32...got nice drip grind...maybe a touch finer than that...sound right? Anyway, when i attempted to replace the hopper minus finger guard, I discovered that the holes no longer lined up where they were...my 32 mark no longer was relevant...don't know how to reset without the hopper reatached...there's a metal phillips head screw that is attched to the bottom oif the hopper...is that a fail safe, to prevent ruining the burrs? I'm really confused....and lots of half chewed beans at the bottom of grinder, even though I pulsed tapped etc.. PLEASE HELP!!!
EDITED 15 minutes later..after searching for "Zeroing Rocky"...I found a post (review) that explained (as i originally thought) that to zero the grinder, i had to slowly rotate clockwise till I just hear the burrs touch...He says to do this with motor running...my manual says to rotate with the motor OFF!...no wonder I couldn't hear anything...what i don't get, is my manual says NEVER depress the grinding adjust stop button while the motor is running....well, how can you turn the hopper, if you DONT hold the adjust button? Am I missing something here? Yeah, I know, an Italian manual, but...geez, I think I must be the dumbest bunny here.

Well, there are three possible hopper positions when the burrs touch. Here is what I would do:
Take out the hopper
Slowely turn the upper burr carrier until it touches the lower burr; it's a right-hand screw system. Clearly, you will know when it stucks.
At this point, it is the most probable location that the mark being zerod in from the factory. So, find the position that the hopper fits the upper burr carrier.
Put the hopper back and wind it back a few noches (10 notches may be), and try to find the point when the burrs touch while spinning.

Hi...I just edited my post...when I turned the upper burr carrier (without holding down the adjust button) it just kept turning till it locked down...now sound of burrs touching....and hard to see as well....guess I'm geting old, or too long with a Maestro.. I held motor switch down, and slowly turned till I heard scraping of burrs......when I replaced the hopper my zero was about 3 notches off(to the left)...is that normal? I'm grinding for vac pot at present, so it's not quite as critical as i get used to Rocky...he's a somewhat messy bloke, hung up grounds and all, but the grind looks nice....think I'll try industrial masking tape over the screw holes... Cheers yourself!

Three noches to the left seems all right to me; mine is at two. The manual said about not pressing the adjust switch while the motor is running; (do not) try that when you have beans in the hopper and not grabbing the hopper; it's fun!

The zero point on my Rocky DL is about 5. I use a small, round brush when I grind and encourage the beans, if necessary and to also clear out stuck beans from the screw holes where they do tend to get hung up. I also removed the portafilter holder and place a small pitcher under the chute to catch the ground coffee as it exits. Works well with minimal mess. I also have found a small sink plumbers friend fits almost perfectly into the hopper, does a nice job of clearing out residual grindes in the chute after grinding, so I do not have any stale grinds in there. (I only grind what I plan to use and have no beans residing in the hopper.) Others have talked about using one or two turns of teflon or plumbers tape wrapped around the threads on the upper burr carrier, which I have done and found my espresso grind improved in consistency. Sounds like you have found your zero point, which may change (mine did) if you apply the teflon tape. While not the ultimate in grinding capability, the Rocky is sturdy and easy to change from espresson to vac pot demands and back. I have found even when changing the grind settings, it is pretty easy to be consistent and find your specific points again for grinding espresso or whatever. For me this point changes depending upon the beans I am using for make my beverage.

Thanks for the responses...well, I ground 9 7 gr scoops of home roasted Kenya/WP Sulawesi decaf this morning....kitchen temp around 70 f...humidity around 40-50% I'd guess....the result?...... an UNBELIEVABLE amount of stactic (spray.. and grounds clinging with all their worth to the sides of my container (I removed the PF fork)... My Maestro NEVER exibited this to any extent....and I had to rap the back and sides several times to get beans to continue grinding, as they got hung up.....not much if any visible oil on the beans, a "light" full city roast, 3 days old) Not being quite as intuitive as most of you, is there a certain container material that help curtail the static cling?..plastic, metal, ceramic, etc?...I used a paper cup....probably the worst choice possible, but that's me...
