Subject: Elektra Semiauto - Valve type?

Hi all,
I am still a little new to espressomaking with my Elektra and among other things, have not tried backflushing yet. In Marks excellent review, he writes that the semi uses a 3 way solenoid valve, and so recommends backflushing - but in the review comments, someone points out that it is a manual valve?

Can someone clarify the correct type of valve the Elektra uses and what difference this makes for backflushing advice? oh - and general cleaning advice would be appreciated too!

Thanks in advance, Mads

I think the thread or comment you saw was whether or not the valve was a selenoid, or another type.  I am not positive, but I do not believe that it really makes a difference as far as how you backflush the Semi.  From what I remember, the valve is not technically a selenoid, but works the same way and performs the same function.

The best thing to do is to read Mark's review of the unit here on the CoffeeGeek site.  He goes into the proceedures neede to care for this unit.  I find his suggestions right on.

The diagrams I have in my Elektra parts catalog simply call it an "elettrovalvola" which, as far as I can tell, is Italian for "solenoid."  Not terribly helpful, I know, but there you have it.

Personally, the first thing I would do if I had this machine at home would be to somehow run a line from that drip tray to a drain.  The problem is that the base is pretty well packed, and it would be difficult to run a hose through all that stuff down there.

OK - thanks guys! I will stick to Marks advice for cleaning, solenoid or not.

Best, Mads
