Hi

I upgraded from a Gaggia Classic to a Silvia and noticed that the Silvia was a lot quieter.  The pump never seems to strain or care whether you have overloaded it or not, it always seems to sound pretty much the same.  The Gaggia was noisier and it quietened down noticeably but with some signs of strain as the pressure increased during the pull.

I was curious as I have read some machines of the HX variety are noisy and some are quiet.  Relative to the Silvia how do they rate for quietness?

Just curious really as one day I might be tempted to get an HX machine.

Regards,
Grant

If you run a vibration pump completely isolated, they're actually pretty quiet. Not much more than a gente buzzing sound as they pump water. But add a casing, mounts, and all the other stuff around them and the reverberation can be mild to irritating. The thread "Adventures in pump noise reduction" is just one example how owners have delt with it (my choice to move the pump outside the casing among the most extreme).

To your question, HX vibe pump machines vary in the sound they emit from model-to-model and even machine-to-machine of the same model. If the sound quality is really an important aspect, then a rotary pump is the way to go. Even the loudest rotary pump I've heard is quiet compared to a vibe pump machine, and the really quiet ones border on nearly silent operation (i.e., the gurgle of water from the HX is louder).

I am in the process of deciding whether to mod my Wega to become Rotary Pump or go thru noise reduction training.  I haven't approached Master Yoda (Terry Z) yet... but it is on the list to do... I may end up with a Dan like solution if not a heavily insulated solution.... I am almost of the mindset if you took the vibe pump outside the casing and sat it on the table next to the machine it would be quieter....

Dan...(can I just say you da man...I remember when we both first started playin' with espresso)

Dom,

Outboarding the vibe pump is a half-hour job and $20 in parts. If you have the cabinet space, give it a try. Valentina is quieter than an inboard rotary, if that helps motivate you. The connection tubing is important. I used s/s wrapped 3/8" lines, which is much better than 1/4" John Guest (tends to buzz).

PS: Heh heh... I'm in denial over my pre-Silvia / Krups days... only recently did the last remnants make it to the Helping Hand mission.  ;-)

Yes young Kehn, but a remote rotary is light years quieter than that of a vibe pump it is. ;-)

Dom,

Silly newlywed you are. Lesson number one. Order the pump. Then come home all exited "Honey I just got us the bestest thing ever! it won't even take up space on the counter, and really, hasn't the whole EXO thing gone just a little to far? Let's rotary pump that bad boy and get on with things".

Ok, now take her by the hand go have a nice dinner and enjoy your evening. Send the machine to me I will update it and rotary pump mod the machine and send it back. All done. What do ya say?
