On the www.espressopeople.com site, under the "Product Comparisons" list for grinders, it says that the Gaggia MDF is "Yes - not recommended" for use to grind for drip, French press, percolator, vacuum pot, or pour through machines.
The same comment is shown for the Rancilio Rocky.
Does anyone know why grinding my own beans on my Gaggia MDF for my regular drip coffee maker would be a no-no?
If I've misinterpreted the chart info, please let me know.

Looking at a comparison chart I made with a few of their offerings, I'd say it's the interpretation of "not recommended" that's throwing you. I bet they don't recommend the Rocky or MDF for drip, etc as they are overkill. You could use a lesser grinder. For example, the Solis Maestro gets a yes for those brewing methods. Pretty poor to be so ambiguous on those charts.

I have used my Rocky with great success for French Press and Vac pot. Quite frankly, I don't understand their recommendations. If the MDF is unsuitable for FP, et al, it's because it produces too many fines. If this is the case, it is certainly not suitable for espresso. From what I've read, the steps are too wide to give good control over espresso, but it should be fine for everything else.
Kay..Depending on where you purchased the MDF and how old, you might be able to "do over again" If it's out of the return period (usually 30 days I believe...some are 14 days) see if they'll take it back with a small penalty (they can re-sell as refurb)..as long as you seriously upgrade...Rocky or better.... If you folks are ever down here, bring your machine :>D and we'll give my Rocky DL a workout!
