The HX Love article describes a simplified flushing routine. The paragraph you cite could more succinctly say "The flush amount depends on how long the machine has been idle." The thread "Fine Tuning Brew Temperature on a Heat Exchanger Machine - A Workable Solution" covers this in excrutiating detail with volume per minutes idle (Abe Carmeli, Bob Yellin and others have developed charts for repeatable temperature accuracy within a degree).
That said, I think the HX Love article is due for an update to better explain the "pro method" versus the "water dance" method, plus introduce innovative modifications that further simplify the routine (as Dave / cannonfodder describes in "Max GH temp on a E61 HX machine?").

Just speculating here: There may be differences depending on the heat transfer rate through the HX walls. If this is limited, say, by scale deposits on the outer and / or inner HX wall, Water temperature will drop if you over-flush. Actually, I suspect something along these lines to be the case with my Simonelli. The other extreme would be a brand new machine with a mirror-clean HX where you would have to go to very low boiler pressures initially (Scott's Atlas comes to mind). Right now, I flush 5-6 oz right before locking the PF. I heat the cup with the flush. emptying the cup and wiping cup and group dry before locking the PF takes about 10 sec.

Oh no - that's ok, really Dan. I already read past that part where you told 'me' to stop here (I am that kind of keep it simple person... for the most part)! I was just confused with that one part of overflushing. Any more details and I'll be drinking a few too many cafe correctos.. ;-)

it took a very sensitive yirgacheffe to show me the flaws of the flush/rebound method. like tiger and his swing, it took awhile for me to effectually switch my habits. but the flush-and-lock is now my favored method by far. and for the first time, i'm consistently nailing finicky beans and blends. one might even dare to use the word "clarity." or not...

This has been so informative for me! My new expobar arrives on the 10th of August ... it's circled on my calendar, with the title, 'e-day' ... it may seem a tad silly to you, but for me, this is my first good machine, replacing my little (almost) clapped out sunbeam thermoblock.
