Hey - on my espresso machine, I'm guessing I have a water softner to help control calcium... but, my question is, where would the equipment be located, and how would I know when to add/change any salt (?) neccessary for the proper functioning of the water softner... can someone pls shed some light on my confusion... thx, monkeyspanker.

Do you think we would be able to help you without letting us know at least what machine you might have?

Why do you "think" you might have a water softener inside your espresso machine?

You might have a water filter...don't know.

I would like to help you out here...but you didn't give enough info to receive an intelligent answer.

...Hey

If your "water softner" is a resin ion exchange in-line filter type of unit the total capacity is dependent upon the amount of resin contained in the unit.  How much water will be soften & to what extent is dependent on a number of variables.  Primarily capacity of the filter, temperature & the hardness of your water.  Check out Jim Schulman's (anotherjim) post about water.    Recharging these units is simple.  Just immerse in a NaCl solution overnight.

thanks for the reply... I've got a Gaggia Topazio at home. I'll measure the hardness first and take it from there as well as checking out the the other water related posts... thanks again for the info... the spanker.
