Espresso: Gaggia Evolution
Grinder: Nemox Lux

Subject: Gaggia Evolution vs. Gaggia Espresso?

Any thoughts on how these two Gaggias compare?  Using the WLL 'Compare-O-Matic' the performance and features appear to be quite similar.  A refurbished Evolution brings the price down to a little bit less than the Espresso, so I'm trying to decided between these two.  I have a Nemox Lux grinder in the mail and my budget is tight, so I can't be convinced of going the Silvia/Rocky route. ;)

Does this basically just come down to aesethetics?

Any thoughts on buying refurbished machines?  It seems pretty common on this forum, but I do wonder if it's worthwhile for a little savings upfront.

Thanks!

You've got it nailed -- the same machine in different cases. And same as the Carezza and maybe some more... all fine machines for the price.

I have no qualms with a refurb -- I choose to think that the thing that would have gone wrong already has, and the rest has been tested.  It's better than a new one!  Or something.....

Thanks, Chance!  I greatly appreciate the feedback.

Hmmm...I guess I'll have to give these choices some more thought.  I'm planning on going to Intelligentsia in Chicago for the first time tomorrow and picking up some Black Cat.  So, by this weekend I'll have good espresso, a good grinder and no machine in sight...I'll have to rectify that soon!

Eric.

As mentioned, the internals of the two are the same. The main difference is in the case design.

However, there is one other difference: like the Carezza, the Evolution has a smaller water reservoir than the Espresso (according to Gaggia: 1.25 L vs 1.95 L for the Espresso). Since it pulls out more easily, the smaller reservoir may be easier to refill if you are unable to use the pour-over feature of the Espresso to fill the unit from above. If you had little overhead clearance and could not, removing the reservoir on the Espresso could become a PITA.

I'm not certain how big the drip tray is on the Evolution. The Carezza's tray is purported to be much smaller than that of the Espresso. I wouldn't worry so much about the reservoir size, but would be concerned if the drip tray was tiny. I haven't used the Carezza, but it sounds like my flushing/cleaning habits would be difficult with the smaller pan.

Thanks, Dave.

I went for it and purchased a refurbished Evolution from WLL.  Unfortunately, my grinder has yet to arrive, so I haven't been able to try pulling any shots.

I have an Evolution I've been using for about a month, and bought it brand new.  I can take some pics of the drip tray if anyone wants to see how it looks.  I usually end up dripping stuff in there after I pull the shots since I don't remove the PF right away...let the puck dry out a bit.  I'm pretty new at all this stuff anyway but I could take pictures of mine or answer questions if anyone has some.  Bought my first bag of Black Cat from Whole Foods last Friday and I swear I'm addicted to the smell of the beans before they're ground.  Fantastic stuff but it seems oily - I bought a Gaggia MM grinder and have to use the coarser settings.  Anyone else notice this with Black Cat?  The espresso also looked like it had little dots of oil on top, but it's the best tasting stuff I've made so far.  I just wish I knew what really good espresso should taste like so I can judge my shots...

Get a better grinder and the Evolution will appreciate the difference. To my mind, the minimum required is a Lux.

I knew I wanted to once I used the MM...sent it back for the MDF and hopefully it should work well with the Evolution.  Can't wait to test it out with some more Black Cat - that stuff is so addictive.
