I thought that since there are quite a few Mazzer Mini owners here on CoffeeGeek, I would share and summarise the modifications that I have done on mine. Please share your modifications - the idea being that this thread could be a useful reference for other Mazzer owners wishing to do a little something to improve on the stock Mini...

I'll start off with a simple one - remove the finger guard. It prevents the cleaning of the chute leading from the burr area to the doser. You will have less stale coffee that will be affecting your first shot...

Here's the related post on my blog.

The stock Mazzer is quite tall and may therefore not fit under most kitchen cabinets - at least it will be inconvenient to pour beans into the hopper due to the small clearance between the top of the hopper and the bottom of the cabinet. Fortunately Mazzer offers a shorter hopper as an accessory and as I posted on my blog, one of the first things I did was to swap the stock hopper with the shorter one.

There are alternative ways of coping with the tallness of the Mazzer - a couple of good related threads right here on CoffeeGeek:

We then get to the mods that have a significant impact on the cleanliness of the Mazzer. In standard form, the doser vanes do not sweep the doser as efficiently as I would like. In other words, to reduce the amount of cleaning you need to do and/or to reduce the amount of stale coffee in the doser the electrical tape mod or the sweep mod is an easy to do and cheap improvement. Just double fold an appropriate length of electrical tape and attach one strip to each of the vanes on the "star" section of the doser mechanism - make sure that no adhesive surfaces are exposed! I elaborate in a bit more detail on the respective post on my blog - including a "before and after" pic.

The fourth and final mod I have done to my Mini is the "inverted cup mod". The top of the dosing mechanism of the Mazzer collects grinds and brushing them off is the most time consuming step in cleaning the Mazzer. With an appropriately sized inverted cup that has notches cut in to accommodate for the doser vanes (so that it fits snugly on top of the centre section of the doser mechanism), you will have a lot less to clean - effectively just a cuick brush of the chute and you are done (and you will also be wasting less coffee)! Again, some further elaboration and pics on the post on my blog.

Now - anyone have any other suggestions?

Have you thought about doing the "sweeper brush" mod? It's where you use a piece of rubber, dried silicone, and even a small brush and glue it to that metal thing that sweeps the walls of the doser. I imagine that it's quite good when the "inner chute" of your grinder is empty and the coffee shoots out and sticks to the wall of the doser.

Geeze! You scooped all of the good mods!

But I still have one here, I recently preformed a power cord modification that changes the power cord so that it comes out the bottom rear of the grinder. I then put an inconspicuous black plug to cover the hole in the side where the cord used to ridiculously protrude.
See previous post here

Do I get to dub this the "mmm_crema" mod? Being that I have not seen anyone else post this? :^)

mmm,

Where did you find the black plastic plug? Looks like an OEM part.

Nicely done Teme!  I intend to purchase a MM in the near future, and I have been combing the search pages looking for the various mods, thinking how I wished this information had been gathered into a single thread or article, and here it is.

This is a very thoughtfully produced thread (including links), which I'm sure will be used by many in the future.  Thanks,

Mark
