I am looking at an old one, and the slots don't seem to go all the way through. They seem to just about make it to what I am thinking is the top (or bottom, in my inverted case) and then stop. This is why I can't find them in my present uside-down condition. I did brush the seat pretty vigorously.

This happend to me when I changed the first gasket, I forgot to wet the gasket before i put it in. I just used an awl to pry it out. I didn't see any damage on the gasket so went ahead and put it back in.
