Although I'm a huge straight espresso drinker most of the time, first thing in the morning I prefer a drink with a little bit more volume, so I'll usually have either drip coffee (ONLY if I'm running late for work), or an Americano. Usually I'll add the hot water directly from the hot water jet first, then pull my shot about 1-2 minutes later. Will doing this upset the thermal stability of either the heat exchanger, or water in the boiler thus altering the taste characteristics in the espresso? I haven't had a chance to try it the other way yet. The reason I usually add the hot water first is so that by the time I add the shot the super hot water has had a chance to cool down to drinkable temperature. Should I be adding the hot water last? Thanks to all the Americano fans out there for their advice!

Looks like you got it right.
If you pour the overheated water on the good coffee it kills it.
Once the water is in the cup it cools enough almost immediately so I don’t wait between filling the cup and pulling the shot.
If you wait, like you do, the water is probably 190deg by the time you pull the shot.

Your espresso machine is listed as the Nuova Simonelli Appia, this has a 5L boiler. There's no reason to worry about 2 or 3 ounces of water loss doing anything to harm espresso there. I don't think you'd need to have any concern about this on a HX machine with a boiler over 1L.
