Hey, let's see if others can come up with stills of machines in movies... :)
I really enjoyed the movie Showtime. Robert DeNiro is probably my all time fave actor, Eddie Murphy was hillarious in the movie, and the scenes with "Bill" Shatner are guffaw-able.
When I saw this movie in the theatre, I spotted not one but TWO espresso machines on the counter in DeNiro's "made over" house, after the hollywood wizbangers decided it wasn't flashy enough for TV.
We rented the DVD tonight, and yep, there they were... the backs of a Francis! Francis! X3, and a La Pavoni Lever machine.
Thanks to the screen cap ability of PowerDVD (a WinXP app), I can now tell that it was in fact a La Pavoni Europiccola, because there is no gauge at the top of the sight glass on the left side, and the height is short. You can see the portafilter is in place, and that set decorators put the steam wand on (leaving the frothing attachment off the brewer).
And I have another reason for liking the movie so much... Finally, I can say that "Bobby" (to his friends) and I have at least one thing in common... both of us have the same espresso machines in our homes :) :)
Lastly, note that while they have what appears to be a manual juicer, there's no grinder :)

I got Spiderman for Christmas, and I noticed a baby blue Francis Francis X1 on the table with the turkey in Peter Parker and the Osborne kid's apartment.
BTW, I've noticed something - I think Robert DeNiro has some sort of clause in his movie contract that La Pavoni lever machines must be in all his movies! :) I noticed one in Analyze This and Casino over the last few weeks.

I recall seeing a very stylish looking espresso machine in the Hugh Grant movie "About a Boy". Can't recall what kind it was but I'll be renting the disc sometime in the next few weeks to watch it with the GF, who missed it in the theatres.
Should I be worried about this turn of events and rising level of interest in arcanity.... is the CoffeeKid sending us down the road of being the newtrainspotters?

You're right, I've been noticing coffee machines in movies, magazines, tv, and pretty much everywhere now. I'm not really sure what it all means, but other people think I'm a little crazy when I happen to mention it to them *sigh*
Anyway, I noticed the coffee machine in About A Boy when I saw it at the movies. I have no idea what it was then, and even now, but I sure thought it looked like a stylish way to make coffee. Here is a rather bad picture of the machine anyway.

Actually, just another thing really... these look like illy collection or illy espresso cups to me. Since I don't know the collections, I am only assuming.
Interesting way to pour the espresso into the frothed milk though. The espresso looks quite light, and doesn't have any crema. Then again, being a newbie, I'm not altogether certain how lever machines are suppose to work either, and what the outcomes (in terms of espresso) are like.

Hey everyone! New here but thought that this would be a great place for me to start contributing.
My first interest to have a cappa was after seeing a big, beautiful machine in the movie Hudson Hawk with Bruce Willis. Looking back now I believe it was an old La Pavoni steam machine sitting up on the bar? Soon after I attempted a straight espresso shot and was utterly disgusted. Being some eleven years ago, I now believe that the teeny-bopper behind the bar had no idea what he was giving me, let alone what I knew about what I ordered. Needless to say my view has changed dramatically and am in the persuit of the fine lady Silvia.
More recently, I saw Tommy Lee pulling a shot for himself on some type of pump driven machine during the special for VH1 (a year or 2 ago?)

I was channel surfing last night and saw a brief clip where they (one of the music channels) were discussing/showing some of the extravagances that rock stars have installed in their homes. Apparently Tommy Lee got tired of running out to Starbucks and contracted with them to install a completely equipped full-blown Starbucks installation in his house (their equipment but for his use only). Hmmmm... imagine having a three group La Marzocca in the kitchen - sweet. Let's just hope he's wise enough to be beans elsewhere!

Thanks for asking Shred.... yes I did. The happy ending to my saga is buried in the forum archives but this link will get you.
I'm totally stoked because....
1) Just received my Sulawesi and Sumatra from SM's and now have the requiste ingredients to make an espresso blend optimized for milk drinks and also to try making a Black Cat knock-off based on a blend mix posted in this forum.
2) Going to Cozumel next week to celebrate my birthday with the wonderful new GF. Not only is she a very special lady and we're like peas in a pod in many ways (all good).... the small hotel/villas where we'll be staying just wrote back to confirm that the room comes with a 4 cup coffeemaker and a daily supply of what the proprietor says is the absolute best coffee on the island. Coz is not known for having exceptional coffee available but it appears that the innkeeper may just be a budding coffeegeek! (even if he doesn't know it yet - I'll bring some fresh home roasted blend and get him turned on to the possibilities).
