Espresso: Rancilio Silvia

Subject: New Espresso Machine Buyer

Hey fellow geeks.

I am looking at finally entering the grown-up world of real Espresso machine owners. At present I have a very old steam driven pseudo-espresso machine which just doesn't cut the mustard any more. So (on a button) I am looking for advise on that first Espresso Machine purchase.

At present I am looking at the Gaggia Espresso, reviews seem OK. However I have also looked at the Gaggia Evolution, Gaggia Topazio, Gaggia Garezza, La Pavoni Cappuccino, La Pavoni Plus Lusso, Pavoni Eurobar, Nemox Sprint and Nemox Junior (current favorite). Can anyone help me choose?

Cheers

Hey there, I'm no expert, and I'm not super familiar with the machines you've listed, but I too have been researching my next machine.  After much (at work) web surfing, I've noticed two things for sure:

  1. Save enough money for a GOOD grinder!
  2. In the $300 - $400 price range, there is no competition with the Rancilio Silvia.  Everyone is basically splooging over that machine (for the money).  It seems like a quantum leap is necessary to improve on it (up to maybe $800+).

my two cents...

Note that the good grinder is number 1 on the list.  This is very important.

Good Luck!

Well after a great deal of searching and testing I have finally made the big purchase. After everything I have read and all the machines I have tried, I just couldn't beat the Rancilio Silvia for price or quality. So thanks for all of the advice and tips I have found on this site.

I picked up my new machine today for the hansome sum of $795 (New Zealand dollars approx = $400) fairly cheap really.. So far I have made it through the un-pack and instruction phase. I have filled the water tank ground a fresh batch of coffe and swithched my new baby on in anticipation of a fresh cup of coffee. Well here goes nothing, time to try my newby coffe making skills. Will let you know how things go.

Wish me luck.......

Well I have made about 20 shots now and am getting better by the minute. Man the Silvia rocks. A great looking machine which is very simple to use.

Now, how the hell am I going to get to sleep with an endless supply of coffee at my finger tips.......

Sleep is highly over rated.  You can sleep when you die.  :>)

In all reality, when I got my first quality espresso machine, I just couldn't stop with the espressos.  It has settled down some.

Enjoy Silvia, the new girl in your life.

Yes, sleep is indeed over rated. Well after two weeks of continuous practice the planets have finally aligned and I am now able to produce an excellent shot every time. However, my continueing quest for the perfect shot was greatly assisted by the purchase of a good grinder (Mini Macho by Enzo, great grinder) and a half decent Tamper.

I too will now strive to finally attain enlightenment by achieving the God-Shot. My the espresso gods smile on all of us.....
