Hey everyone!
I'm fairly new to the espresso scene and have a couple questions.  In January (hopefully) I am buying a grinder and machine (probably a Rancilio Rocky and Silvia) as my first real hardware.  I've tasted great espresso from friends homes and from local coffee shops and really want the same quality for myself.  I have extremely hard and not very-tasty water, and want to be able to plumb a machine in using a water jug (something like you'd see in a water cooler).  I've seen this done with commercial, super automatic machines, but is it possible for a smaller single boiler type machine like the Silvia?  By the way, if there are other suggestions about machines in a similar price point, I am open to them as well.  Thanks in advance!

Hello ..

I'm not completely sure what you are thinking about ...

I have very hard water and use the softener system in the link below. The system has a softener cartridge and then a carbon filter. It does a great job with my water ... the system is installed rather easily under the kitchen sink.

The Sylvia is not a plumbed in machine but you could use this system as a source of soft clean water.

If you can work a plumbed in machine into the budget it is a very nice feature.

Cheers ...

This is Terry Stockdale's solution to an auto fill Silvia.  It's pretty clever.  He fits a valve float onto the reservoir lid and attaches it to a water line.  You could run off of your water lines or a water bottle/flowjet set up.  That or place your water source above the reservoir.  Part 2 and 3 have pictures and installation instructions.

mrgnomer, Thanks for posting that link!  It's a really interesting article.  He found a very creative solution with the Silvia.  I would have said the Silvia can't be direct plumbed.  Now, we know that's not true.
