Was just hit by anti-teflon-itis with my cookware, so thought I'd de-teflon-ize my stir crazy which gets to at least 483F during a roast.  I used various pieces of sandpaper and sanding blocks.  I should have cafiza'ed it before sanding.  Took an hour or 2 of sand/vacuum/rest...

Egads, woman! Why?  Is teflon bad? Like Asbestos, bad?  Or just a wee bit bad?

You were going to get a pic of this later today...

teflon at room temp is inert. afaik

teflon at high temps outgasses a potentially poisonous gas.  Opinions vary as to a safe high temp (600F? 500? ...)(cf google)(enjoy!)
EDIT: PTFE: Polytetrafluoroethylene   .  fluoro

I don't think the problem is a serious one in teflon coated thick anodized aluminum pots, but more in the infinitude of cheap teflon coated pan-ware where the substrate is not thick enough to evenly distribute the heat and extremities, away from liquid, can reach elevated temps.

Nonetheless I decided to retire all my teflon stuff (like 5 pieces) and work on playing with ss/alum/ss sandwich stuff, or enameled cast iron - basically whatever I can find inexpensively at Marshals or fleabay.  EDIT also thick copper (not revereware)/alum/ss, or thick copper/ss .  ss by itself does a very poor job of transmitting heat.

{the latest trigger for this I found humorous - was eyeing pans at Macys (teflon coated anodized aluminum), and a customer came over and commented that she liked teflon but understood that once you scratched it it was cancerous.  I indicated that I thought that was not true, but I later took it to simply be one more tap on the shoulder to look for an alternative.}

Aw, crap!  Thanks for the quick reply. I don't have any aluminum pots/pans - so ok there.  Much appreciate the heads' up, something to think about.

You're welcome.  I'm going to work on a custom made ss insert for the stircrazy.  Not too long ago one person posted a roaster where the entire motor assembly was gutted and transferred to another plate - I forget if it was ss.
