Subject: ECM Cellini issue

I just bought a used ECM Cellini, and I believe there's a problem with it.   However, before I come to any conclusions I wanted to check my sanity with more experienced people, since I've never used the E61 group before.

So, I follow the general startup procedure: fill water reservoir, power on, open steam valve until boiler full, close steam valve, and then release some steam at about 1 bar pressure.  So far everything works.  Steam is coming out, and hot water valve also working.  Now comes the problem - I lift the group lever to flush water through the group head, and nothing comes out.  The pump sounds like my Pasquini Livietta when the espresso grind is too fine, and no water can get through.  Sounds like something is restricting the water flow.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there a problem?  If so, any idea what the problem may be (the pump seems to work fine since it fills the boiler)?  Thanks in advance!

I assume you are lifting the lever fully up.  If you run the pump for 10 seconds with no water coming out, what happens when you lower the lever?  Does water then drain into the drip tray from the bottom part of the group?

Yes, I'm lifting the lever all the way up.
There is no water going into the drip tray, so I'm guessing that indicates there's no water getting to the 3-way solenoid valve.

This one has come up before. You'll need to turn off the machine, let it cool down, undo the nuts at the top of the mushroom, and extract part no. F205 at Click Here (www.espressoparts.com) . There's a teensy hole in the top (your "gicleur") which will be blocked with crud. Use a thin needle or wire to clean out the hole, reassemble and water will flow from the group.

Thank you Alanfrew, I am eternally greatfull!  I cleaned it out and now the water's coming out.  Do you recommend I descale it to get out the stuff I couldn't take out with my wire?
