Subject: Filter baskets for Silvia

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question about my Racilio Silvia. I've read several times, and have experienced, that with Silvia it is very difficult to fit 16gr of coffee nicely into the filter basket without the puck hitting the shower screen.  I would therefore like to replace my stock filter baskets.I have no idea, though, which other baskets would fit the Silvia portafilter and most importantly improve my shot quality.

Also, where do I buy these? I'm from Belgium, Europe and as far as espresso shops goes there isn't much around here. I'm therefore thinking of a web shop either a European one or a US or Canada based one that will export.

All tips are welcome! Thanks in advance for your help.

If the top of your puck is hitting the showerscreen you could try less of a dose.  The Silvia I had liked to be underdosed a bit, I found.

A common problem with the stock baskets that come with the Silvia is that the walls slope inward.  With the double I found you had to be within a somewhat tight dose range to get enough grinds in the basket to both slightly underdose and also tamp well before the tamper gets hung up on the sides of the basket.  A 58mm tamper doesn't go down that far in a basket with sloped sides.

Changing from sloped sided baskets to straighter sided baskets helps a lot.  The tamper will go down much further.  The La Marzocco triple basket has pretty straight sides.  Synesso has a range of baskets, 14g, 18g and 21g, if I remember correctly,  that have much straighter sides.  I've got all three.  The 21g Synesso basket I've found to look just like the La Marzocco triple.  My espresso improved with the Synesso baskets and I think that was because I was able to underdose and get down far enough in the basket for a good tamp.

I bought the Synesso baskets as part of a group sale.  You can order directly from Synesso but I believe shipping is only free on orders over $50.

I use a La Marzocco straight sided double with my Silvia and have had great results with it. Purchased from 1st Line for $10
