Would someone kindly walk me through the advantages & disadvantages of each design.  I am looking at machines in the low and high $2K and this is the primary difference.  The boiler is a single boiler machine fyi.

Your question is confusing.. or confused:

Heat Exchanger (HX) - a large tube running through a boiler through which the brew water s passed. The water in the HX is heated through the conduction of thermal energy from the water in the main, larger vessel in which the HX is contained.

Rotary Pump - a type of pump riven by a rotational motor to increase the pressure or water flowing through the pipes of an espresso machine.

Boiler - a chamber in which water is heated.

You can have a vibratory pump/HX machine
"       "         "  a Rotary pump/HX machine
"       "         "  a Vibratory pump/dual boiler machine
"       "         "  a  rotary pump/dual boiler machine
"       "         "  a vibratory pump/single boiler machine
"       "         "  a rotary pump/single boiler machine
..But don't call me in the morning...  ;-)

So... what was the question...?

That being said though,Im thinking that in on your budjet Id go with a good HX and a mazzer or Macap grinder .If you can spend $2500.00 its prety easy to get a great espresso set up.
What ever you do ,dont call frcn in the mourning.

Good advice... $2500 will get you a VBM DS ($1700) and a Mazzer SJ or thereabouts, and that is a great combination that can service a home user for a decade or two with little difficulty.

..And an early-morning E-Mail is not a problem..  or even mourning...   ;-P

interesting question.

ALL dual boiler machines surpass single boiler or HX heat exchanger machines.

low budget?  -- Expobar Brewtus II  about $1,600.00

water tank and vibe pump LA Spaziale MINI Vivaldi II -- about $1800.00

rotary pump plumb-in  LA Spaziale MINI Vivaldi II  about $2,000.00

grinder??  several in the $400 to 600 range -- Rocky and Macaps to name a few of the major players, good used can also be found.

and vibe v. rotary pump =  minimal difference in performance

from the authority in precision espresso,

I gotta agree w/ Fred.
" brewtus",  in spite of the CUTE name, is / are very trouble prone.
but there are some that DO / still work.

and stick with machines that have a track record of shipment to customers:

** that would NOT be alex duetto (NONE)
OR
**  the Vibiemme duos. (maybe a few)  but you can BURN yourself on the outside case!

What about the customers in Europe?  I know of quite a few that are perfectly happy with their machines.

Under this advice, no retailer could ever sell a "new to market" machine.  Just my humble opinion.

All the best,

Martin
