Espresso: Gaggia Syncrony Compact
Posted Sun Sep 7, 2008, 1:24am
Subject: Gaggia Syncrony: How fine can the grind be?

HI All,

I have a Gaggia Syncrony Compact, and I am wondering if I am expecting too much of my grinder:

I set the grinder to 1-2 ish, to get a fine a grind, and yet the esspresso still only takes about 8 to 10 seconds to come out.

I thought I should be aiming for 25 seconds for an espresso shot, so to get the water to come out more slowly I am setting the grinder to the finest setting, and still getting a shot of espresso in about 10 seconds.

I checked the dregs and the grind still seems course... not fine... I was expecting it to be a little courser than Turkish Coffee, but not that fine...

Is this normal from the Syncrony's grinder, or should it be finer than that?

I gave the grinder a good clean yesterday, and it all looks good.

If that isn't normal, and I should be having a finer grind, what can I do to the grinder?

Many Thanks,

PS - I'm using a fresh roast espresso blend...

Sam

Hi All,

been readin around - it seems the guide is that a double shot of espresso should take 20-25 seconds, which means mine is on the right track...

I guess the grind depends on the type of coffee you use as well? I'm reading on the forums that different coffee's require different grinds to get the taste right ...

Rgds,

Sammy

Sam, I wouldn't take the 20+ second mantra too seriously. Trust your tastebuds! I use a couple different superautos, as well as a La Pavoni, and my extraction times are rarely more than 10-12 seconds. If you're not getting the kind of extraction you want, go finer with the grind--although, on the Synchrony, you're apparently close to the limit. I'm a big fan of superautos, including the Synchrony, but you can't do a lot with the variables. E.g., you can't control the tamp, and the grind settings are limited. Of course, you might get a somewhat better cup by grinding your own and adding it to the bypass doser, if your model has one.

HI Arabica,

Thanks for the reply,

I'm finding that as I tweak my machine's settings I'm getting better results.
