Well how long did it run dry? That's really the issue. If it was a matter of seconds it should be OK. I don't think vibratory pumps having moving parts that will wear out when dry (for short periods of time), but will certainly overheat because of it. I've done the same thing in my machine and was worried, but after filling the tank and priming the pump all was OK. Think about it.... when you first get your machine the pump runs dry for the first minute...... Just don't let it happen too often.
The answer is: "not very long". But now, I can't seem to get a flow. I did refill the tank, and I don't seem to be getting any flow when I turn the pump on. It's acting like it needs a jump start, like a suck on a siphon or something to get going again. I'm not too sure what to do.
Hi Adam, & a belated Weclome to the Coffeegeek forums! {;-) How old is this machine please? Sorry to hear you're having problems, but it may have an air lock/bubble that just won't clear out/through to get the water flowing.
I'd try taking the water input tube & hold it up higher than the pump itself, in a small container of water to see if that small gravity drop primes the pump & does the trick. If that doesn't work, I'd then try holding the tube higher than the pump again & blow into the tube to see if that gets the water to flow.

The vibe pumps that Gaggia uses are really a good quality pump and are quite rugged. I doubt you damaged it at all with the limited abuse you gave it. If you did destroy the pump they aren't too expensive, readily available and quite easy to replace.

Which worked for you Adam, just holding the tube higher over the pump in a container of water, or holding the tube the same way & priming/filling it up with water &/or actually blowing into the tube with a bit of pressure to persuade the water to flow?
