Starbucks warrantee people told me that Radio Shack sells it.  It's called "food grade grease".   They also told me that restaurant supply stores carry it.

aabreetech,

Is there anything else you recommend in a "cleaning/lube schedule" for these machines to keep em in top espresso shape?

We have a lube kit on our web site, and that includes a tube of lube and the orange O-ring for the brew head.
This O-ring does not have to be changed unless it gets damaged.  The lube is a sanitary lubricant that will not taint when it comes in contact with food.  You can pickup a large tube at some restaurant supply stores or some wholesale grocery outlets.  More than you will ever need in a lifetime.  On the bottom of the brew group there is a rod that is attached to the piston shaft.  Lube the shaft where it goes into the cylinder.  Hard to get to so I use my Q-tip.
Keep the tracks on the side rails clean of coffee grounds.  A little coffee is OK.  I just use a Q-tip.  The very top portion next to the brew head is the most important as this will affect the cycling of the brew group when coffee starts to get compacted at the top.  This could break a drive gear and you don't want that.
Set your water hardness in your menu. I prefer to set it to the next setting higher to prevent scale build up.  The solution is designed to remove only a certain amount of scale.  If you have accumulated more than this can remove then you are going to have a problem later.  Let the machine descale for you.  Never descale with the boiler on.  This will react with the silicone gasket in the boiler and it will turn brittle after awhile.  Then you will get a leaky boiler.

Sipping my 1st Quad Latte from my new Italia.  No problems so far, except I need more espresso beans now. :D

What does everyone have their GRINDER set to?
The Factory setting seems to be at "11".

Kevin!
Nice to hear about your progress! And you, aabreetech, seems to have real good knowledge about this! But I still would like to call for finer grinder settings. As I said before, Kenwood, my settings were 2-4, depending on how oily the beans were. That gave me the best product in the cup, and that's what I recomend my customers. I've sold these SAECO machines for some four years and had about 4-5 brew units returned for warranty. Which grinder setting do you recomend, aabreetech?

Oh, and Kevin! My "ventliation" is your priming! :-) And I used 9g, which was maximum.

Hi
These machines are very good at what they do, but more care will be needed if you stray from the factory settings.  Adjusting the grinder to lower settings may be done in 1-click increments, but you should brew 20 drinks in a row without any malfunctions before lowering the setting again.  You may do this until you have a malfunction then you should raise the setting to the next higher number, and leave it there.  You must maintain the grinder in a manner that will allow the setting to remain there.  If you use an oily bean this setting is not going to work long. 2 clicks higher or more are best for oily beans.  Oils will start to glue themselves together and form rings or clumps that harden and foul the grinder or tunnel.  This will cause a message that the grinder is out of beans.  We know there are beans in the hopper so you have a clog in the system that is not allowing the grounds to flow to the doser.  There is a sensor in the doser that measures the grounds for the proper dose.  When the grinder runs for a longer time than the computer thinks it should the message out of beans appears.  Use a vacuum to suck out the doser box and tunnel between the doser box and the grinder should clear the blockage otherwise you will have to clean the grinder.  Make sure the tunnel is clean before reassembling the grinder.  You should do a bypass shot with no coffee to clean the brew group when you run a restricted shot to keep the brew group clean. Have fun and enjoy your new machine.
We were out of the lube kits for a while and the kits were removed from the site but they are back in stock and I will check Monday to get them back on the site.

Had a couple of friends over for an Espresso evening on Saturday for the Italia's maiden voyage at Kenwood's House.  I pulled almost 40 shots that evening.  Got my froathing down pat.  No problems with this machine at all.  I'm completely happy I spent the extra bucks and got the Digital version.  I'll clean the machine today after all the weekend use.

Switched the beans to Peet's Garuda Blend yesterday for the Sporano's premire.

Kevin,

How's the new machine holding up?

This weekend I took the bre unit out to clean.  This is the part I'm still not clear on.  Do I just need to run warm water to rinse all the grinds off and such.  What else should be done weekly?
