I recently purchased this espresso machine and have been making mochas with it so far. To make more room for my milk pitcher I removed the drip tray. I now notice a small buildup of water at the base of the unit. I comes from a little semi-circular alcove at the back of the tray area. I examined the tray and there is a little catch well that would go into the alcove if the tray were in place so I'm assumming this normal.

My previous machine didn't do this and it's design was essentially the same.

Is this some sort of pressure relief flow from the pump?

Thanks for any information.

Yes, the pump has an active pressure relief that will deposit about a half to one ounce of water in  the course of a pull.

This is a good thing - it means the pressure is being limited to about 10 or 11 bar on short volume or long time shots. It means you can make singles or 35 second double ristrettos without getting too much pump pressure and the consequent bitterness.

If the water is missing the drip tray, jiggle the hose and make sure the tray is all the way in.
