You may want to give Salvatore a call (see http://www.salvatore-espresso.com/). He recently listed a rebuilt HX for $1250 on this, once-popular, auction site. The machine came with a 3-year warranty. Try getting that on a new machine...

I just read the specs for the Brewtus II and III; the III has a PID but the II also allows for temperature control.  How does that work?  And does anyone know if the steam boiler on either machine can be turned off independently?

It has a digital temperature controller (not a PID, but works well)

It cannot.  The steam boiler has an HX that is used to preheat the brew boiler water coming in.

Thanks for the quick reply.  That explains the price difference (from the Duetto II).  One of the attractive features (to me) of a double boiler is turning one boiler off to save power.  The digital temperature control would be fine.

Sigh, I thought i had a line on a Duetto I for $1500 and was mentally adjusting to that before another buyer beat me to it.  Now I'm in the Bricc vs. Vetrano vs. waiting for a used double-boiler holding pattern.  Don't think the Brewtus is for me.

While you can't switch off the steam boiler on the Brewtus machines, they also don't run at 20amps, putting the power consumption at about the same as most HX's. . . About.

Let me explain...

In the Brewtus, the steamboiler, not only produces steam, and feeds the hot-water wand, but ALSO houses a Heat Exchanger, for incoming water fed to the brew boiler.  This ensures that you dont have cold water entering the brew boiler, which can possibly cause temp changes during a shot.

Being that the Brewtus II/III run on 15 amps, the power consumption would be roughly the same as a HX machine which runs on 15amps.  Roughly.

The Brewtus III DOES use a PID controller.  The Brewtus II uses an electronic control unit.  Its not a PID, but, in the end, it accomplishes the same thing.  Easily manipulated temperatures, via a electronic panel on the front of the machine.

...But, I can completely understand that the Brewtus isn't for you.  To be perfectly honest, every single prosumer double boiler machine available, is a great machine, all capable of great espresso.  I think the biggest decision to make, when deciding on a model, is choosing your Vendor, and then whichever one looks the best.  IMHO.

If I could do my upgrade all over again, I would have waited/saved more, and went for a double boiler from the beggining.  I currently own a QM Anita, and it is a wonderful machine.  Zero complaints*.  It is an absolutle pleasure to work with, and Chris' and his staff have been wonderful with post-sale service and support. . . Which, by the way, has only been to replace a vaccum breaker, and a pressurestat. . . Two things which eventually all machines need replaced.

*I say zero complaints, because, as a pour-over HX, Anita is perfect.  My, "complaint" is that it isnt a double boiler, which has nothing to do with how Anita preforms.  She is a pleasure to use and work on, and I honestly think she is one of the best valued HX machines available today.(personal opinion, others/you may of course, disagree)
